What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Ampacao offers a challenging yet incredibly rewarding hike, particularly for its stunning sunrise and sea of clouds views. While the trail can be steep and slippery, the panoramic vistas from Sagada's highest peak are consistently praised. It's a less crowded alternative to other viewpoints, making for a more serene experience.
"One of the best tours in Sagada isn't popular among tourists, maybe because it's tough to climb up and slippery to go down. But it's all worth it when you reach the top at the tower. The hike up to the tower is challenging, but the rest of the trail is easier. Mount Ampacao is taller than Marlboro Hills, making it Sagada's highest peak. It's also less crowded and has hills and steep slopes. When my guide and I climbed, we were the only ones there. We started at 4:30 a.m. watched the sunrise at the top, and finished by 7:30 a.m taking just 2-3 hours (the time it takes to hike will depend on how fit you are and how many people are climbing with you).
For the best experience, hike this mountain early in the morning until sunrise. Make sure to ascend all the way to the top at the tower to fully enjoy the 360° view and the sea of clouds. Although you can also see the sea of clouds from the rolling hills, it's okay if you only want to climb up to there. But if you want to fully immerse yourself in the mountain, I recommend climbing all the way to the top, especially since our stay in Sagada as tourists is temporary. So, it's better to make the most of it.
If you're planning to visit Sagada and stay here for a while, I suggest adding this to your plans. It's definitely worth it."

"Mt Ampacao (1889 m) is south west of town. Our trekking started from the west road (17.091536, 120.888521) and followed south (4 km, 1.30 including a few stops to take photos). It is necessary to allocate additional 20 minutes to climb up the actual Mt. Ampacao from the sunset viewing hill, as the trail is quite steep and slippery. But the view from the top is worth the effort. From sunset viewing hill it is only 1.4 km (45 minutes) to go down to Balugan Road in Pide."

"It's a better, quieter sunrise viewing in Mount Ampacao than the super crowded Kiltepan. But you got to climb a slippery slope to get to the peak. A trekking pole will be helpful. There are also leeches so best to wear long pants and sleeves. And bring alcohol too just in case a leech bites you. At the summit is the Sagada Radio Tower and a 360 degree view of all of Sagada!"
