Reviews Summary

Visitors find Punta Cruz Watchtower a beautiful and serene spot with a rich history, offering great views and a unique geological landscape. While some note minor upkeep concerns like vegetation on the tower, the low entrance fee and peaceful atmosphere make it a worthwhile stop, especially for families and those seeking quiet coastal beauty.

"Nice place little far away and out of the way. Great views"

Matias Rezza

"This has always been beautiful, but there are some newly-built structures that just compromise the natural appeal of the place. There is now a historical marker that disrupts the view of the sea behind the tower; it looks misplaced.

The tower itself is riddled with vegetation. I’ve learned that the structure was already restored before, but with these plants growing within the gaps and crevices of the structure, the whole thing is at risk of deterioration again. It is worrying.

The management requires an entrance fee, so they could have at least used some of this income to hire someone to regularly pull those weeds out of the structure before they grow big and damage the heritage building all over again."

Fjord

"Very serene and beautiful coastline. Watchtower adds a bit of fun, with bats in the belfry. Yes there are actual bats, a whole lot of them, in the top of the tower. Don't worry they won't hurt you.
The low coastline just past the tower is brand new land that rose up from the sea in 2013, so is pristine virgin land and full of dead coral. Quite awesome."

A Glimpse into History: The Watchtower's Past

The Punta Cruz Watchtower in Maribojoc, Bohol, stands as a silent testament to a turbulent past. Constructed during the Spanish colonial era, its primary function was to serve as a vital lookout point. It was part of a larger network of coastal defenses designed to protect settlements in the Visayas from the frequent slave-raiding attacks by Moro pirates, particularly during the monsoon season. This strategic position allowed defenders to spot approaching enemy vessels from afar, giving them crucial time to prepare their defenses. TikTok

Today, the watchtower is a protected heritage site, though some visitors have noted the presence of vegetation growing within its structure, raising concerns about its long-term preservation. The small entrance fee collected from visitors is intended to support its upkeep, highlighting the community's effort to maintain this historical landmark for future generations. Reddit

Exploring the tower offers a tangible connection to the region's history, allowing visitors to imagine the vigilance required centuries ago. It’s a reminder of the resilience and strategic ingenuity of the people who once inhabited this coast.

Nature's Remarkable Reshaping: The 2013 Earthquake's Legacy

The area surrounding Punta Cruz Watchtower holds a unique geological story, largely shaped by the devastating earthquake that struck Bohol in 2013. A significant portion of the coastline just past the tower is new land that rose from the sea as a direct result of the seismic activity. This phenomenon created pristine, virgin land formations that are now a point of interest for visitors. Reddit

This newly formed land is characterized by its unique landscape, often featuring dead coral and other marine remnants exposed by the uplift. It offers a stark visual representation of the earth's power and its ability to reshape landscapes dramatically. While not a typical beach for swimming, it's a fascinating area to explore and observe the raw, natural changes that have occurred. Reddit

Visitors can walk along this unique coastline, appreciating the untouched nature and the geological marvel it represents. It's a reminder that even in destruction, nature can create new and intriguing environments. The contrast between the historic watchtower and this geologically recent land formation makes Punta Cruz a place of dual fascination.

A Haven for Wildlife: The Tower's Bat Colony

One of the most surprising and delightful aspects of visiting Punta Cruz Watchtower is the discovery of its resident bat colony. These nocturnal creatures have made their home in the upper levels of the historic structure, adding an unexpected element of wildlife encounter to the visit. Reddit

Visitors often report hearing or seeing the bats, especially as dusk approaches. While it might seem startling at first, these bats are a natural part of the tower's ecosystem and pose no threat to visitors. They are a fascinating example of how nature can adapt and coexist with historical man-made structures. Reddit

Observing the bats, even from a distance, adds a unique dimension to the Punta Cruz experience. It's a reminder that historical sites can also be vibrant habitats for local fauna. Remember to be respectful and avoid disturbing them, perhaps refraining from using flash photography directly at their roosts.
