"Simply an amazing and beautiful church to visit. When I went it was mostly empty but there were some members cleaning the church and the grounds. The church is well maintained and the grounds are clean. Good place to stop and grab some photos and a respite on the pews."

"A solemn and peaceful place of worship in the heart of Dumaguete. The church’s historic charm and tranquil atmosphere make it perfect for prayer and quiet reflection.
The lighting of candles is done outside, adding a beautiful, reflective touch to the visit. Whether you're attending Mass or just passing through, it's a spiritually grounding experience."

"A church has been at this site since the 18th century, although the present building dates to the 19th century. The church was made a cathedral thanks to the papal bull Sanctissma Ea Verbo of 1955.
The church is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria and there is a statue of her to the right as you enter the church. The building is Spanish Baroque. The interior has a single nave with no side aisles, although seats are made available outside the building during a busy mass. The side walls are decorated with pilasters throughout and in between the windows and doorways.
The interiors are covered in white plaster, although the plaster nearer the altar seems to be newer as it has a brilliant sheen to it and really highlights the crucifixion reredos."

A Glimpse into History

This is evident in the single-nave interior, the pilaster decorations along the walls, and the overall structure. While preservation efforts have maintained its grandeur, some visitors note it looks more modern than its age might suggest.
Dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, a statue of the saint is a notable feature inside the church. The cathedral's historical significance is deeply intertwined with the Catholic faith in the Philippines, making it a landmark of both spiritual and cultural importance.
Architectural Highlights and Ambiance
The interior features a single nave, devoid of side aisles, creating an open and accessible space. The walls are adorned with pilasters, and the windows are fitted with beautiful stained glass that bathes the sanctuary in colored light. Beyond the visual appeal, the cathedral offers a tranquil and solemn atmosphere, perfect for prayer and reflection. The acoustics are noted as being conducive to traditional music, though a sound system upgrade for readings and the priest could enhance clarity. Even if not attending Mass, exploring the surrounding shrines and displays adds to the enriching visit.
