What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hilutungan Island is a popular stop for its vibrant marine life, offering excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities with abundant fish. While the underwater experience is a major draw, visitors note that the island itself is underdeveloped with limited amenities and can get crowded. It's often best enjoyed as part of a larger island hopping tour.
"Our first stop under the vast blue skies the Lord graciously blessed us with was Hilutungan Island, just a short boat ride from Cordova Port. From afar, it looks simple and unassuming, but the shore buzzes with energy. Dozens of boats anchor close to one another, creating a floating community of travelers laughing, snorkeling, and chasing schools of fish beneath the waves.
The water here isn’t perfectly clear—there are bits of floating seaweed and the current can get quite strong—so it’s best to keep your life vest on and stay near your boat. Still, the underwater scene is alive and colorful. Bring your snorkel; watching the fish dance around in their natural home is a small joy that makes the stop worth it.
That said, once you’ve been to Nalusuan or Caohagan, you’ll realize Hilutungan doesn’t quite compare. The island’s main structure looks old and somewhat forgotten, and there isn’t much to explore on land. If you’re choosing only two or three islands for your hopping tour, it’s perfectly fine to skip Hilutungan and spend more time in the more scenic and vibrant spots nearby.
Hilutungan isn’t the highlight of Mactan’s island circuit—but as a warm-up stop, it gently reminds you that paradise often gets better the farther you go."

"Gilutongan island, absolutely nothing to do or eat or drink, 150 pesos per person for entering a minimal sandy beach with a broken resort ruining the view, it's dirty and it must be high tide to be worth trying to swim, have very low expectations to enjoy the experience, difficult to find a regular boat ride on a schedule they go when and if they have enough passengers
Not for tourists I'll say"

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Keep in mind that the island itself has minimal facilities, so pack all necessary supplies like snacks, drinks, and extra clothing. The lively atmosphere with many boats might be exciting for some children, but it can also be overwhelming. It's best to manage expectations regarding the island's development and focus on the underwater adventure as the primary family activity.
🐠 Snorkelers & Divers
While the underwater experience is highly rewarding, remember to prioritize safety. The currents can be strong, so always use a life vest and stay aware of your surroundings. Consider visiting during peak daylight hours for the best visibility and photographic opportunities. Some experienced divers might find it less challenging than other sites, but for casual snorkelers and divers, it offers a fantastic glimpse into a thriving underwater ecosystem.
💰 Budget Travelers
To save money, consider packing your own food and drinks instead of relying on tour packages that might include them at a higher cost. Look for tours that offer a good balance of destinations for the price. While the island itself offers little in terms of amenities, the value lies in the vibrant marine life accessible for a small fee.

Exploring Hilutungan Island's Marine Sanctuary
While the underwater world is the main draw, it's important to be prepared. The currents can be strong, so wearing a life vest is highly recommended for safety, even for experienced swimmers. The water clarity can also vary, with occasional seaweed present. Some visitors note that while the marine life is impressive, the island itself is quite basic and lacks significant development or amenities, making it more of a 'warm-up' stop on island hopping tours rather than a destination in itself.
To make the most of your visit, bring your own snorkeling gear if possible, as rentals might be limited or of varying quality. The best time for underwater photography is typically mid-morning to early afternoon when sunlight penetrates the water effectively. Remember that an entrance fee is required to access the sanctuary, contributing to its conservation.
Island Hopping Logistics from Mactan
When planning your trip, it's important to understand that transportation is primarily by boat. While private boat rentals offer flexibility, they can be more expensive. If you opt for a group tour, departure times are usually fixed, and boats often leave when they have a sufficient number of passengers. Some travelers have noted that finding regular, scheduled boat rides can be challenging, so booking a tour package is often the most reliable option.
Consider packing essentials like sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water, as the sun can be intense. While some tours may include lunch, it's wise to confirm this beforehand or pack your own snacks, as dining options on Hilutungan Island itself are very limited.
