What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the breathtaking Cordillera Blanca views and the 'mirror of the sky' effect when conditions are right. It's highly recommended as an acclimatization hike, though some find it steeper than expected. The lake itself can be disappointing in the dry season, but the surrounding scenery is consistently praised.
"Went 04/11/25. Honestly don’t even bother with this walk only if you love rubbish pollution. The WHOLE trail is covered in rubbish. It’s absolutely disgusting. Even in the “lake” there is rubbish floating around."

"Good acclimatization hike with a path that is easy to follow. From Huaraz you can take a collectivo (Such as number 10, they go through the yellow road on GMaps, not far from the Plaza de Arma).
The hike took me a bit less than 2 hours up and 1.5 hours down (With breaks).
Lot of dogs (especially on the top) on the way but they are peaceful and just want your food.
However the lake is really disappointing in July, maybe because it's the dry season, there is barely anything left"

"Misinformation alert! This is NOT an easy hike. Different sites and people are expressing that it is. It is very steep. People who have gone to the national park say this hike is harder than those. The views, if granted by cloud cover, are exceptional."

The Acclimatization Advantage
It's crucial to approach this hike with respect for the altitude. Take it slow, stay hydrated, and be aware of any symptoms of altitude sickness. The trail is generally well-marked, making it accessible for independent hikers.
Capturing the Iconic Views
Photographers will find ample opportunities here. The best light is often during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset, when the mountains are bathed in warm, soft hues. However, be prepared for rapidly changing weather; clouds can obscure the view quickly. Bringing a wide-angle lens is recommended to capture the vastness of the landscape.

For those seeking more convenience, hiring a private taxi directly from Huaraz is also an option, though it will be more expensive. Regardless of your chosen transport, ensure you have enough local currency for the fare.
