What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are impressed by the scale and historical significance of the Wari Site Museum, recognizing its potential to rival more famous Peruvian archaeological sites. The excavated areas are described as breathtaking, offering a deep dive into the pre-Inca Wari civilization. However, a significant drawback for international tourists is the lack of English information, making a guide essential for comprehension.
"6 Soles entry fee in 2025. Worth having a guide if you don’t speak or read Spanish as otherwise you’ll not be able to understand much of what you’re looking out. The parts that have been excavated are spectacular though."

"We had a great time as this archeological site; the size of the whole civilization (1,600 hectares) really is impressive. It's too bad the Peruvian government isn't funding more excavation/discovery of this place and many others; these sites could become just as popular/well-known as Machu Picchu, I do believe.
The path into the main site is surrounded by a forest of cactus and the area is very tranquil. The main areas that have been excavated are truly breathtaking, especially when you imagine what you're not able to see there. It's hard to believe the size of the civilization, the amount that's underground, the way they lived, everything; it's all so breathtaking.
I was stuck deciding between going with a guide or on my own by public transport, but I'm definitely glad we paid a little bit extra to go with a guide, as there are barely any signs as you walk through the site and you won't know what you're looking at."

"A really nice museum of the Wari empire. The area outside is well preserved and impressive. But: No information is in english. For foreign tourists, it's really hard to understand anything, very sad for all the work of making the museum. Also, outside there is no information at all. You have to take a guide to understand what you see. But the guides only speak spanish as well, so as a gringo you won't understand anything. But since it was for free, its still 5 stars."

The Significance of the Wari Civilization
Visitors can explore the remnants of their urban layout, including important sectors and residential areas. The on-site museum complements the outdoor ruins by housing artifacts that provide deeper insights into Wari culture, art, and daily life. The sheer scale of what remains underground hints at an even grander civilization than what is currently excavated, making it a truly awe-inspiring historical destination.
Despite its historical importance, many travelers note that the site lacks extensive English information, making a guide almost essential for foreign visitors to fully grasp the significance of what they are seeing. This underscores the importance of local knowledge in unlocking the secrets of this ancient capital.
Navigating the Wari Site: Tips from Visitors
A recurring piece of advice from travelers is the critical need for a guide. Information panels are scarce and predominantly in Spanish, making it difficult for non-Spanish speakers to understand the context and history of the ruins. Guides can illuminate the urban layout, architectural details, and the daily lives of the Wari people, transforming a walk through ruins into an educational journey.
Beyond practicalities, visitors also emphasize the importance of staying hydrated and protected from the sun, especially during the summer months when temperatures can be moderately hot. Bringing a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent will significantly enhance the comfort of your visit, allowing you to focus on the historical marvels around you.
