What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Humantay Lake is widely praised for its breathtaking, surreal beauty, with many calling it a must-see. However, visitors consistently note the challenging hike and high altitude, with some finding it overrated given the travel time and road conditions. The option to rent horses is a popular compromise for the strenuous final ascent.
"Amazing place but it's not an easy hike especially the last part of climbing the mountain, but you can rent a horse for 90 soles at the bottom of the mountain to do the last part. Overall a must see place of you visit Cusco."

"The lake was pretty though I've seen even better ones elsewhere in the world. Surrounding snow capped mountains were nice too.
Trek up is not for everyone especially non hikers. Renting horses is an option but don't know how animals are treated there.
Quite trashy around the crowded areas up by the lake as not everyone practices TAKE YOUR OWN TRASH OUT hiking étiquette.
Overall it's overrated especially considering 6 hours round trip by vehicle from Cusco and mostly on very bumpy, dusty roads."

"This lake is well worth the trip! We traveled from Cusco by private taxi, which we prefer over tour groups. We left around 8 AM, making it a long day overall. Our taxi driver waited for us and brought us back afterward.
Vehicles must stop at a certain point, from which it’s about a 45-minute walk to the base town, Soraypampa. Our driver actually walked with us and helped arrange horses for us to ride up, which was 90 soles. The men renting the horses seemed reluctant at first, but he convinced them. We then hiked back down.
The view was breathtaking, and it was a peaceful place to sit and take it all in. We packed plenty of snacks and water, but there were small stands along the way selling snacks if needed. Since we traveled on our own schedule, we arrived later in the day and avoided most of the crowds."

The Altitude Challenge
To combat this, it's highly recommended to spend at least one to two days in Cusco (around 3,400 meters) before attempting the trek. During your time in Cusco, focus on gentle exploration, stay well-hydrated, and avoid alcohol and heavy meals. Many travelers find that drinking coca tea or chewing coca leaves can significantly help alleviate altitude sickness symptoms.
Even with acclimatization, listen to your body. If you feel unwell, it's better to turn back or take a break. The option to rent horses for the steeper sections of the hike is available, offering a less strenuous way to reach the lake for those struggling with the ascent.
Navigating the Hike and Terrain
Many visitors opt to rent horses for the last, most demanding part of the climb. This service is available at the base of the trail for a fee (around 90 Peruvian Soles). While this makes the journey more accessible, some travelers express concerns about animal welfare. For those who choose to hike the entire way, sturdy hiking shoes are essential for grip and ankle support on the uneven paths.
Remember to pack water and snacks, as while there are vendors along the way, they can be pricier. The humantay lake hike distance isn't extreme, but the elevation gain and steepness make it a demanding trek. Planning for a humantay lake day trip requires an early start from Cusco, often before dawn, to maximize daylight and avoid the midday sun.
Environmental Considerations
Travelers are strongly encouraged to practice 'Leave No Trace' principles. This means carrying out all your trash, including wrappers, bottles, and any other waste. The goal is to preserve the lake humantay for future generations and maintain its stunning, untouched appearance.
While the turquoise waters are mesmerizing, swimming in the lake is generally prohibited. This rule helps protect the delicate ecosystem and the water quality. Respecting these guidelines ensures that Humantay Lake remains a breathtaking destination for all.
