What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Wariwillka is an interesting archaeological site, particularly for those keen on Wari and Middle Horizon history. Visitors appreciate the on-site museum's artifacts and the unique atmosphere created by the ancient molle trees and local legends. However, the extensive reconstruction can sometimes obscure the original stonework, leaving some visitors questioning authenticity.
"Wariwilka is an unusual small site worth visiting if you have any interest in Wari or the Middle Horizon. The main compound has been extensively reconstructed, and unfortunately it is not obvious what stonework is original and what is rebuilt. Some deep pits inside the main compound show that some walls extend over two meters below the current surface. Areas outside the main compound also contain deeply buried walls that are invisible now; the reconstructed compound is only part of the original site. The site presents plenty of archaeological and architectural puzzles to consider. The small museum is nicely presented and shows some interesting and impressive artifacts. It is also a pleasant spot, with a grassy interior enlivened by confusing bits of walls and partially shaded by two enormous, gnarled molle trees. An archaeological underground channel drains water from the site through a little bath or well just outside the main compound. We we told that if a couple wishes to remain together forever, they should drink from that well. We were also told that people feared the well and that a kind of bad spirit could sieze people or animals who drank from it. Make your own choice!"
