El Misti Volcano (5822m) hike & fly, what a stunning mission. Firstly, I took normal, not 4x4 taxi to the beginning of the trail saving 200SOL and adding a good hour of hiking compared to the normal South Face route. After a few hours of approach and climbing, I got to the stunning bivvy at 4550m, above the sea of clouds, mind-blowing sunset, instant noodles, coca tea and some sleep. I was solo ...

Reviews Summary

El Misti offers a challenging but incredibly rewarding climb, with many praising the stunning summit views and the unique experience of camping at high altitude. However, the extreme altitude is a significant factor, with several reviewers noting the difficulty and the need for thorough acclimatization and experienced guides to avoid severe sickness. InstagramReddit

"Awesome hike, make sure to acclimate well beforehand"

-

"Arequipa, known as the "White City" due to its many buildings made of white volcanic rock, is the second-most populous city in Peru and a UNESCO World Heritage site. And we couldn't recommend it more! The presence of Misti and the other nearby volcanoes adds to the city's scenic beauty. Misti is part of the Andes mountain range and is situated in the southern part of Peru, near the city of Arequipa. It is one of the three volcanoes that surround the city, along with Chachani and Pichu Pichu."

Lima Gourmet

"Challenging climb mainly because of the altitude (5850m). Being acclimatized to a high altitude is an absolute must and make sure you go with an experienced guide. The trek started at an elevation of about 3500m, then we set up the tents at 4500m after a 6-hour climb which was fairly easy. On the second day, things got quite a bit harder; another 6-hour trek to reach the crater. Needless to say that the high altitude kicked in, not to mention that it was a steep climb. Luckily, some parts of the volcano are sandy and perfect to make your way down quickly (2 hours)."

Trekking El Misti: The Ultimate Guide

Embarking on a trek up El Misti is an adventure for the reasonably fit hiker, but it demands respect for the altitude. The most popular route is a two-day expedition, typically starting with a drive to a base camp elevation of around 3,500 meters. From there, a 6-hour hike leads to a higher campsite at approximately 4,500 meters, offering stunning views of Arequipa below. InstagramReddit

The second day is the most demanding, involving a steep, sandy ascent to the summit. This push often begins in the pre-dawn hours to reach the crater by sunrise. The high altitude can be brutal, leading to symptoms like nausea and vomiting for those not properly acclimatized. However, the reward is immense: standing at the rim of the steaming crater, surrounded by the silence of the Andes, is an unparalleled experience. InstagramReddit

Descending El Misti is significantly faster, with the sandy slopes allowing for a quick slide down, often taking only a couple of hours. This rapid descent can be a welcome relief after the strenuous climb. Proper gear, including warm layers, sturdy boots, and plenty of water, is non-negotiable for a safe and successful trek.
