What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Rainbow Mountain is a breathtaking natural wonder, with its vibrant colors leaving visitors in awe. The challenging hike at extreme altitude is often described as 'tough but worth it.' However, the popularity means significant crowds, and the colors may not always be as saturated as in edited photos. Altitude sickness is a common concern that requires careful preparation.
"Our tour guide, Annibal, made our Rainbow Mountain day trip extremely uncomfortable. From the beginning, he made repeated inappropriate sexual comments and asked intrusive personal questions that no guide should ever ask. His behavior came across as creepy and unprofessional, and instead of making the experience enjoyable, his constant banter was a nuisance.
On top of that, he did not return the correct change for our Rainbow Mountain ticket, even after we asked him for it multiple times. This felt dishonest and disrespectful.
The worst moment came at the end of the tour, when he kissed me on the cheek with noticeable pressure. While we understand cheek kisses can be customary in Peru, this was unwanted and far too forward, crossing a clear line.
It’s important to mention that the driver and the other guide were very professional and respectful. Annibal’s actions are not a reflection of them, but his conduct was unacceptable and left us feeling uncomfortable and taken advantage of.
Rainbow Mountain itself is breathtaking and absolutely worth visiting, but I would strongly advise avoiding any tour led by Annibal. His behavior was unprofessional, inappropriate, and put a damper on what should have been a memorable experience."

"It was tough but worth it. We are in our 50s, and made it to the top in about 1.5hrs. Most of it was a long slow assent. Last 30 mins were steap but you just go very slow. Altitude makes you tired very quickly, little bit of a headache. Very long drive to get there. Top was cold and windy with a few hundred people there at any one time."

"The trip was absolutely incredible! It was filled with unforgettable moments. We went with a private tour because we knew we couldn’t handle the high altitudes, and it was such a smart decision. Our tour guide and driver were total rockstars, providing us with attentive care and hospitality throughout the entire journey. Even when I experienced altitude sickness during the climb, our guide's unwavering enthusiasm and support kept us going. Despite the language barrier, the locals were incredibly friendly, making us feel welcomed and appreciated. And let me tell you, the rainbow mountain was absolutely breathtaking! Its beauty left us in awe. This entire experience surpassed our expectations and holds a special place in our hearts."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider tours that offer shorter hiking options or the use of horses for part of the ascent. Alternatively, exploring less demanding but equally beautiful alternatives like Palccoyo might be a better fit. Always consult with your pediatrician before planning such a trip with children.
💰 Budget Travelers
To save money, consider packing your own snacks and water instead of buying them at inflated prices near the summit. While independent travel is possible, tours often bundle costs making them competitive. Remember to factor in entrance fees if you opt for a self-guided trip.
🚶 Solo Travelers
While some solo travelers have successfully hiked independently, it requires more planning and confidence, especially regarding altitude and navigation. Tours offer a hassle-free way to experience the mountain and connect with fellow adventurers.

Understanding Altitude Sickness
During the hike, go slow, take frequent breaks, and stay hydrated. Chewing coca leaves or drinking coca tea is a traditional remedy that many travelers find helpful. Over-the-counter medications like Diamox can also be prescribed by a doctor for prevention. Listen to your body; if symptoms worsen, descend immediately.
Some tours offer optional ATV rides to shorten the hike, but this doesn't negate the altitude's effect. Even with precautions, some visitors may still experience mild symptoms. Being prepared and respecting the altitude is key to enjoying this incredible landscape.
Choosing Your Rainbow Mountain Experience
Another emerging option is Pallay Punchu, often called the 'new rainbow mountain.' It boasts a more dramatic, jagged appearance and offers a unique photographic opportunity. While still gaining popularity, it tends to be less crowded than Vinicunca.
When booking a tour, check what's included. Most tours from Cusco cover transportation, meals, and a guide. Some may offer additional activities like horseback riding or ATV rides, which can help shorten the hiking portion but don't eliminate the altitude challenge.
The Impact of Global Warming
While this melting has created a breathtaking sight, it also serves as a stark reminder of environmental changes. The exposed minerals are now susceptible to erosion, and the long-term preservation of these colors is a subject of ongoing observation. It adds a layer of poignancy to the visit, appreciating this natural wonder while acknowledging the forces shaping it.
