if you want an alternative to the crowded and low-key underwhelming Rainbow Mountain outside of Cusco, this is it 🇵🇪 one of the craziest places I’ve ever seen, and not another soul around for miles. #peru #cusco #travel #traveltok #travelblogger

🌈 The hidden rainbow mountains Peru doesn't want you to know about. While everyone crowds Vinicunca, Palcoyo serves up the same jaw-dropping striped peaks with 90% fewer tourists. These mineral-painted ridges formed over millions of years - iron creating reds, copper painting greens. At 4,900m, it's a lung-burner but worth every gasp. Local Quechua communities only opened this trail in 2016 af...

Visitors rave about Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain for its stunning, multi-peaked scenery and significantly fewer crowds compared to Vinicunca. The unique Stone Forest is a highlight, and the presence of alpacas adds to the charm. While the journey from Cusco is long, most find the experience well worth it, praising the natural beauty and the opportunity for peaceful exploration.

"Amazing scenery, much quieter than the other Rainbow mountain but more rainbow mountains here plus easier access"

Steven and Lesley Fincher

"Booked a last minute day trip from Cusco to Palccoyo. What an amazing day! We met with friends afterward, who had visited rainbow mountain (Vinicunca) that same day and compared experiences. Although the colours on rainbow mountain are more vibrant, there was about 10x more people at Vinicunca than Palccoyo. Palccoyo also offers a Stone Forest, which I don’t think exists at rainbow mountain. The Stone Forest was definitely a highlight of our day. The tour operator, Inca Highlands, was fantastic! They spoke Spanish and English, answered all questions in detail, and set reasonable expectations for the day. 100% recommend!"

Sarah Janssen

"Booked for a client 2 months prior to date of departure and 12 hours before got an email cancelling the tour as only 2 guests. Not acceptable behavior and could have given more notice! What was the guest supposed to do less than 12 hours prior to the tour?! He travelled from NZ for this tour. Terrible service. I can't comment if tour would have been good as the client didn't get the opportunity. Be warned! Have a back up plan if you do book with these guys."

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Palcoyo Mountain can be a memorable adventure for families, but the high altitude is the primary consideration. Ensure children are well-acclimatized in Cusco for at least 2-3 days prior to the trip. The hike itself is less strenuous than Vinicunca, making it more manageable for younger trekkers.

Pack plenty of snacks and water for the kids, and dress them in warm, layered clothing. The chance to see alpacas and llamas is often a huge hit with children, adding an extra layer of excitement to the journey. Tours often include lunch, which can be a welcome break for families.

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding Palcoyo's Colors

The vibrant stripes of Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain are a geological marvel, formed over millions of years by the oxidation of various minerals. The distinct colors are a result of different metallic elements present in the sedimentary layers.

Red hues are primarily due to iron oxides, while greens are often attributed to copper compounds. Other colors like yellow and purple can be seen due to variations in mineral composition and weathering processes. The high altitude and dry climate help preserve these striking natural patterns.

Unlike the more famous Vinicunca, Palcoyo offers multiple striped peaks, providing a broader and arguably more impressive visual spectacle. The accessibility and fewer crowds make it a favored spot for photographers and those seeking a more tranquil experience.Instagram

Navigating Altitude Sickness

Palcoyo Mountain's extreme altitude (4,900 meters / 16,000 feet) is a significant factor for visitors. Altitude sickness, or soroche, can affect anyone regardless of fitness level. Symptoms include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. It's crucial to acclimatize properly by spending at least 2-3 days in Cusco (around 3,400 meters / 11,150 feet) before attempting the trek.TikTok

To mitigate the risks, stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and heavy meals on the days leading up to your trek. Many travelers find that chewing coca leaves or drinking coca tea, a traditional remedy, helps alleviate symptoms. Some also opt for prescription medication like Diamox, which should be discussed with a doctor before your trip. Listen to your body and descend if symptoms become severe.TikTok

Palcoyo vs. Vinicunca: The Traveler's Choice

When planning a trip to Peru's iconic rainbow mountains, the choice often comes down to Palcoyo or Vinicunca (the 'other' Rainbow Mountain). While Vinicunca is renowned for its intensely vibrant colors, it is also notoriously crowded, with thousands of visitors often descending on the site daily.TikTok

Palcoyo, on the other hand, offers a more serene and less crowded experience, often described as having '90% fewer tourists'.Instagram It features multiple striped mountains, providing a broader panorama, and also includes the unique Stone Forest. Although Vinicunca's colors might be slightly more saturated, Palcoyo's accessibility and the opportunity for a more personal connection with the landscape make it a compelling alternative for many travelers.TikTokReddit
