"Amazing scenery, much quieter than the other Rainbow mountain but more rainbow mountains here plus easier access"

"Booked a last minute day trip from Cusco to Palccoyo. What an amazing day! We met with friends afterward, who had visited rainbow mountain (Vinicunca) that same day and compared experiences. Although the colours on rainbow mountain are more vibrant, there was about 10x more people at Vinicunca than Palccoyo. Palccoyo also offers a Stone Forest, which I don’t think exists at rainbow mountain. The Stone Forest was definitely a highlight of our day. The tour operator, Inca Highlands, was fantastic! They spoke Spanish and English, answered all questions in detail, and set reasonable expectations for the day. 100% recommend!"

"Booked for a client 2 months prior to date of departure and 12 hours before got an email cancelling the tour as only 2 guests. Not acceptable behavior and could have given more notice! What was the guest supposed to do less than 12 hours prior to the tour?! He travelled from NZ for this tour. Terrible service. I can't comment if tour would have been good as the client didn't get the opportunity. Be warned! Have a back up plan if you do book with these guys."

Understanding Palcoyo's Colors
Red hues are primarily due to iron oxides, while greens are often attributed to copper compounds. Other colors like yellow and purple can be seen due to variations in mineral composition and weathering processes. The high altitude and dry climate help preserve these striking natural patterns.
Unlike the more famous Vinicunca, Palcoyo offers multiple striped peaks, providing a broader and arguably more impressive visual spectacle. The accessibility and fewer crowds make it a favored spot for photographers and those seeking a more tranquil experience.
Navigating Altitude Sickness
To mitigate the risks, stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and heavy meals on the days leading up to your trek. Many travelers find that chewing coca leaves or drinking coca tea, a traditional remedy, helps alleviate symptoms. Some also opt for prescription medication like Diamox, which should be discussed with a doctor before your trip. Listen to your body and descend if symptoms become severe.
Palcoyo vs. Vinicunca: The Traveler's Choice
Palcoyo, on the other hand, offers a more serene and less crowded experience, often described as having '90% fewer tourists'. It features multiple striped mountains, providing a broader panorama, and also includes the unique Stone Forest. Although Vinicunca's colors might be slightly more saturated, Palcoyo's accessibility and the opportunity for a more personal connection with the landscape make it a compelling alternative for many travelers.
