What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mohatta Palace Museum is lauded for its stunning architecture and historical significance, offering a glimpse into Pakistan's past and the life of Fatima Jinnah. Visitors appreciate the affordable entry fee and the well-maintained grounds. However, the strict no-photography rule inside the museum is a point of contention for some.
"Its a nice building to go by for a quick stop. Especially good place for people interested in local textiles. Quaid's gallery was not quite impressive. Mobile phones/cameras are not allowed inside, which seems like overdoing security because even museums with quite old artefacts do not bare carrying them. Overall, a good one hour stay is fine. But not worth going out for out of the way.
One thing that was disappointing to me was the museum staff downplaying the building's association with the princely family of Bhopal. I asked the lady at reception whether there is anything related to the princely state or the family to which it belonged, and she straight up said it was an evacuee property left by the Hindu seth Mohatta. Ardeshir Cowasjee wrote a very informative piece on the history of both Mohatta Palace and the nearby Bhopal House with the family of Abida Sultaan, daughter of Bhopal's nawab and mother of Sheharyar Khan — the former Foreign Secretary. Willingly ignoring history is not cool."

"It is a beautiful historical piece of architecture which has been very well maintained. It was last owned by Fatima Ali Jinnah and is a true gem. Inside the palace, it is full of historical and cultural heritage of Pakistan. It houses exclusive photographs of Mohammad Ali Jinnah. It is must spot to visit while touring Karachi"

"Mohatta Palace is one of Karachi’s most stunning and well-preserved historical landmarks. Built in 1927 by Rai Bahadur Seth Shivratan Mohatta, a wealthy Marwari businessman, this magnificent structure was originally designed as his seaside residence. The palace is constructed using beautiful pink Jodhpur (Jaipur) stone combined with local yellow stone, giving it a unique and majestic appearance.
Architecturally, the palace is a masterpiece. It features a blend of Mughal and Rajasthani styles, with elegant domes, intricately carved arches, winding staircases, charming balconies, and serene courtyards. The interior and exterior of the building are equally captivating, and the surrounding gardens add to its peaceful ambiance.
Today, Mohatta Palace serves as a museum and cultural center, hosting various exhibitions, art displays, and heritage events. It offers visitors a chance to explore Karachi’s rich history and appreciate the artistic and architectural brilliance of the past.
Whether you’re a history lover, a tourist, or a local exploring your city’s roots, Mohatta Palace is a must-visit destination. It’s more than just a building — it’s a journey into the elegance and grandeur of colonial-era Karachi.
Highly recommended for families, students, and culture seekers!"
