Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning natural beauty of Jebel Akhdar, particularly its unique terraced orchards and cooler climate. The dramatic canyon views and the opportunity to experience traditional Omani agriculture are frequently highlighted as major draws. However, some find the roads challenging and dining options limited outside of hotels.

"The Al Hajar Mountains are one of Oman’s most stunning and iconic natural wonders.

With the highest point in the Arabian Peninsula (Jebel Shams ) and the lush terraces of Jebel Akhdar, these mountains provide unforgettable experiences for every visitor."

"The best way to experience the Hajjar mountain is to start from Nizwa. There are two prominent mountains which can be explored. Both have different flavour. There is Jabal Akhdar (Green Mountain). There are some nice hotels on Jabal Akhdar. Once can follow some of the mountain trails. There are farms of Rose, Pomegranate etc. However, dont be confused by the name. Mostly the mountains are barren with no trees on them. Besides, it is famous for Diana point, the point made famous by Princess Diana who stopped there on her visit to Oman. The other one is Jabal Shams (Sun Mountain - called so becuase it is the highest point in Oman at more than 3000 metres). The highest peak is under the Army so not accessible. One can go upto the second highest peak which is is also close to 3000 metres. There are a few hotels. However, there is hardly any farming on Jabal Shams. Personally, i liked the drive to the top of Jabal Shams more as compared to Jabal Akhdar. The temperature on both is much lower than the plains. I visited on Decmeber 2020 and the temperature in Nizwa was around 10/12 degree celcius. Just after one hour of drive up Jabal Shams, the temperature dropeed to very pleasant 14 degrees.
These mountains reach 3,000 meters above sea level. Spread amongst the desert and semi-desert, they form a rocky green island on the sandy sea. It is amazing to ride these mountains. Short one-day trips to the deep canyons are amazing. I don't know if you can go there on a trek of several days, if so it would be great to come there. Absolutely Hajjar Mountains must see."

"The Hajar Mountains are the highest mountain range within the eastern Arabian Peninsula. They located in northeastern Oman and the eastern United Arab Emirates. Lying 50 to 100 kilometers inland from the Gulf of Oman coast, they divide the low coastal plain of Oman from the high desert plateau.

The Hajar mountains start in the north, creating the Musandam peninsula. From there, the Northern Hajjar runs southeast, parallel to the coast but also moving gradually farther away as it goes. The middle section of the Hajjar is the Jebel Akhdar, which is the highest and wildest terrain in the country. Jebel Akhdar, in addition to the smaller Jebel Nakhl range, is bordered on the east side by the low Samail Valley. Eastwards of Samail are the Eastern Hajjar, which run east, towards the fishing town of Sur, nearly at the eastern point of Oman. Totally, the mountains stretch for 500 kilometers.

The low and coastal land that is north and east of the Jebel Hajjar is called Al Batinah Region, and the terrain that is inland of the mountains is Ad Dhahirah."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Green Mountain's Unique Agriculture

Jebel Akhdar, translating to 'The Green Mountain,' earns its name from the unique agricultural practices on the Saiq Plateau. At an elevation of around 2,000 meters, the cooler climate allows for the cultivation of fruits and flowers that are rare in the Arabian Peninsula. These include pomegranates, apricots, walnuts, and most famously, roses. The ingenious use of terraced farming, supported by a complex falaj irrigation system, transforms the rocky slopes into fertile gardens. Instagram+2

During the rose blooming season, typically in spring (March-April), the mountains are perfumed with the scent of Damask roses. These roses are harvested to produce rose water and rose oil, traditional products highly valued in the region. Visitors can witness this vibrant spectacle and learn about the traditional methods of cultivation and harvesting. The contrast between the lush green terraces and the stark, rugged mountain landscape is a photographer's dream. Instagram

Beyond the famous roses and fruits, the plateau also supports other crops, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of Omani agriculture. Exploring these farms offers a glimpse into a way of life that has sustained communities for centuries, providing a rich cultural experience alongside the natural beauty. Instagram

Navigating the Al Hajar Mountains: Roads and Access

The Al Hajar Mountains, and specifically Jebel Akhdar, present a unique driving challenge. The ascent to the plateau involves steep, winding roads that are often unpaved or roughly surfaced. For this reason, a 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended, and often essential, for safe and comfortable travel. Many rental car companies will advise against taking standard vehicles up these routes. TikTokReddit

If you are not confident driving in such conditions, or if you do not have a 4x4, several alternatives exist. Hiring a local guide from Nizwa or nearby towns is a popular option. These guides are experienced drivers familiar with the terrain and can also offer insights into the local culture and history. Alternatively, numerous tour operators offer day trips or multi-day excursions that include transportation, removing the stress of navigation. Reddit

When planning your drive, be aware that some sections of the road can be narrow, and you may encounter other vehicles, including tour buses and local traffic. It's advisable to drive cautiously, use your headlights, and be prepared to pull over if necessary. The journey itself, with its dramatic views, is part of the adventure. Instagram

The Majesty of Jebel Shams: Oman's Highest Peak

While Jebel Akhdar is renowned for its green terraces, its neighbor, Jebel Shams, holds the title of the highest peak in the Arabian Peninsula, reaching over 3,000 meters. Known as the 'Sun Mountain,' it offers a different, yet equally spectacular, mountain experience. Unlike Jebel Akhdar, Jebel Shams is largely barren, characterized by dramatic canyons and rugged, rocky terrain. TikTokReddit

The most famous feature of Jebel Shams is the Grand Canyon of Arabia, a breathtaking gorge that rivals the scale of its more famous counterparts. Visitors can drive to viewpoints overlooking this immense canyon, offering unparalleled vistas. While the absolute highest peak is restricted due to military presence, the accessible viewpoints still provide awe-inspiring panoramas. Reddit

The drive to Jebel Shams is often described as more exhilarating than the drive to Jebel Akhdar, with steeper inclines and more dramatic drops. The temperature at the summit is significantly cooler than in the lowlands, making it a popular escape. It's a destination for those seeking raw, natural beauty and a sense of vastness. Reddit
