Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the breathtaking beauty of the four waterfalls in Husedalen Valley, calling the hike a must-do in the Hardanger region. While the full trek to the fourth waterfall is challenging, the stunning scenery and the accessibility of the initial sections make it rewarding for various fitness levels. Parking can be an issue, and the trail can get muddy, so proper preparation is advised.

"We hiked to the first waterfall- it was the perfect hike for us. The gravel road was well-maintained and made for an easy walk. It took us about an hour to go there and back. We saw many families with children, some people with dogs, and some people biking, too. It was pretty busy on a sunny Wednesday afternoon, but we parked along the side of the road along with many others as the parking lot was full."

"We did the hike to Søtefossen on a beautiful summer day in 2025. There are not that many parking spots but we found one place and started the hike. You start on a gravel road but soon you get to a small power plant and get a view of the first waterfall. As you continue, follow the red T's that marks the trail. One the way you get great views to several waterfalls and int he end you get a view to the beautiful Søtefossen. For me it was an 11 km hike with a total elevation gain of 750 meters so this is not an easy hike if you are not used to hiking. But it was a great hike with some amazing views along the way."

Gard Karlsen

"Free parking, it's the starting point to the 4 waterfalls. We went in August, great sunny day

* +6h round trip to the 4th waterfall and back to the parking lot. We stopped for pictures and food

*Apple watch showed 14km for the entire hike (7km to the 4th waterfall, 7km back). If you stop at the 2nd or 3rd waterfall it's less

* Take plenty of water if you go till the end
* Toilet at the 3rd waterfall
* Even if it was sunny, the terrain is muddy. Good shoes are needed
* There are no shops around
* You can swim
* It's a moderate difficulty hike
* There are 2 ways for the hike (the road splits in 2 at the 1st waterfall). We took the right road up, it's a more scenic hike but higher difficulty. And going down we took the left road"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Four Waterfalls of Husedalen

Husedalen Valley is renowned for its series of four magnificent waterfalls, each with its own character. The hike begins with Nykkjesøyfossen, often the first one encountered and a beautiful introduction to the valley's power. Further along, Tveitafossen presents a wider cascade, offering impressive views. As you ascend, Nyastølfossen becomes more challenging to reach but rewards with its dramatic drop. The ultimate destination for many is Søretefossen, the largest and most spectacular of the four, marking the end of the main hiking trail. Instagram+1

Each waterfall is a testament to the raw natural beauty of the Hardanger region. The trail follows the river, providing constant auditory and visual reminders of the water's force. While the first two are more accessible, the latter two require more effort but offer a more profound experience of the valley's grandeur. Reddit

Many visitors choose to hike to one or two waterfalls, depending on their fitness level and time constraints. The trail is marked with red 'T's, guiding hikers through the varied terrain. The journey itself, through lush forests and alongside the roaring river, is as much a part of the experience as reaching the final cascade. Reddit

Hiking the Husedalen Trail

The hike through Husedalen Valley is a highlight for many visitors to the Hardanger region. The trail starts as a well-maintained gravel road, making the initial section accessible for families and even some cyclists. However, as you progress towards the higher waterfalls, the terrain becomes more challenging, involving steeper ascents and potentially muddy sections. Reddit

Key trail features include the red 'T' markers that guide your way, and the varied landscape that shifts from open forest to more rugged paths. Some hikers recommend taking the right fork at the first waterfall for a more scenic, albeit steeper, route, and the left fork for a potentially easier descent. Reddit The total distance to the fourth waterfall and back is approximately 14 kilometers, with an elevation gain of up to 750 meters, so proper preparation is crucial. Reddit

Essential tips for the hike include wearing waterproof hiking boots, carrying ample water and snacks, and being prepared for changing weather conditions. While there are restrooms at the start and near the third waterfall, facilities are otherwise scarce. The effort is well worth it, with breathtaking views of the waterfalls and the surrounding Norwegian nature at every turn. InstagramReddit

The Husedalen Valley Experience

Husedalen Valley offers a quintessential Norwegian nature experience, combining accessible beauty with challenging adventure. It's often described as a 'gateway' to the vast Hardangervidda plateau, providing a dramatic introduction to the region's wild landscapes. Instagram

The valley's charm lies in its concentration of powerful waterfalls, each a spectacle of nature's force. The sound of rushing water is a constant companion on the hike, creating an immersive and invigorating atmosphere. Visitors often remark on the sheer beauty and the feeling of being surrounded by untouched wilderness. Instagram+2

Beyond the waterfalls, the valley offers opportunities for swimming in its clear waters and enjoying the serene forest environment. It’s a place where you can truly connect with nature, whether you're seeking a gentle stroll to the first cascade or a strenuous trek to the summit. Reddit
