Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the unique experience of riding Europe's northernmost tram and the beautiful lake scenery at the terminus. However, the ticketing system requiring an app and credit card, along with the very limited hours of the tram museum, are common points of frustration for tourists. Reddit

"That’s cool!"

B M

"Europe's northernmost tram company. Beautiful lake at the terminus. It's a shame that the beautifully situated hotel went bankrupt during the coronavirus pandemic. The terminus is 235 meters above sea level, and the line is 8.8 km long. It's a shame that the accompanying tram museum halfway along the route is only open on Sundays from 12:00 to 4:00 PM at the end of August; apparently, that's typically Norwegian... Norwegian school holidays are over: everything is closed or has limited opening hours!"

Frank

"A ride on the northernmost tram in the world.
Important for tourists:
There are no ticket machines. With a foreign mobile number, a ticket can only be purchased using the ATB app and credit card.

The associated museum was unfortunately closed."

Navigating Tickets and Technology

A key piece of advice for visitors is to be prepared for the ticketing system. Unlike many European tram systems, Gråkallbanen does not have ticket machines. This means you must use the ATB app to purchase your tickets. For travelers with foreign mobile numbers, this can be a hurdle if not planned in advance. Ensure your credit card is set up for international transactions and that you have downloaded and registered with the app before you need to travel. This digital-first approach is common in Norway but can catch unprepared tourists off guard. Reddit

Community Tip: Some travelers have reported issues with foreign credit cards or app functionality. It's wise to have a backup plan or try to purchase your ticket a little before you absolutely need it to troubleshoot any potential problems. The app is essential for a smooth experience, so familiarize yourself with it upon arrival in Trondheim. Reddit

The Unique Gråkallbanen Experience

The Gråkallbanen is more than just a mode of transport; it's an attraction in itself, holding the title of Europe's northernmost tram company. The 8.8 km line ascends to an impressive 235 meters above sea level, offering increasingly spectacular views as it travels from the city center towards its terminus. The journey is a chance to see the natural beauty surrounding Trondheim, making it a popular choice for tourists seeking a scenic and unique experience. Reddit

At the end of the line, you'll find a beautiful lake, providing a tranquil and picturesque spot to disembark and enjoy the surroundings. This natural beauty is a significant draw for visitors. The line also features an accompanying tram museum located halfway along the route, which adds a historical dimension to the trip. However, be aware that the museum has very limited opening hours, often restricted to Sundays from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, and can be subject to seasonal closures, which is a common characteristic of Norwegian service hours outside of peak tourist times.
