Usually the Norwegian national day is spent wearing a traditional bunad, walking in parades and eating lots of ice cream. This year we decided to celebrate the 17th of May by taking a hike above Svolvær. On this trip we got to see both Svolværgeita and Djevelporten, and in the end we reached this amazing place to take in the stunning views! #travel #svolværgeita #djevelporten #svolvær #content #no...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Fiskerkona Statue for its symbolic meaning and the beautiful, scenic walk to reach it. The harbor views, especially at sunset, are a major highlight, offering a quintessential Lofoten experience. Some note that the path can be less maintained in winter, requiring extra caution.

"We had a wonderful walk from the centre of the town right out to the statue of The fisherman’s wife which is about a 6 km walk from the Central Square. The 4.5-meter-tall statue is located at the end of the breakwater pier. It symbolises the resilience and hope of fishermen's wives as they await their loved ones' return from the sea. Known locally as "Fiskerkona,". On the way we saw the traditional fish drying racks."

"Beautiful place with wonderful views of the sunset. It’s an odd drive to get here driving behind buildings but don’t worry you are good. Once you park take a walk to the edge and read about the monument."

Bronson Kurtz

"Very nice view Point. Go there. No matter how the weather is. We were there in winter, and it was a unique experience. You can't drive till the end, so you have to walk for 5 minutes past some beautiful landmarks. In winter the road was not cleared so we had to walk 15 minutes, but once you are there you won't regret it."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Symbolism of Fiskerkona

The Fiskerkona Statue, also known as the 'Fisherman's Wife,' stands as a powerful symbol of the resilience, hope, and enduring spirit of the women who waited for their loved ones to return from the often-treacherous sea. Created in 1999, this 4.5-meter bronze figure gazes out over the Vestfjord, her hand shielding her eyes as she scans the horizon. Reddit

Her posture and gaze evoke a deep sense of longing and worry, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by fishing communities throughout history. The statue is not just a piece of art but a memorial, honoring the strength and fortitude of those left behind on shore. It's a must-see for understanding the maritime heritage of Svolvær and the Lofoten Islands. Reddit

Experiencing the Walk to the Statue

The journey to the Fiskerkona Statue is an integral part of the experience. While it's possible to drive close, many visitors choose to walk from the town center, a roughly 6 km trek that offers a more immersive appreciation of the surroundings. Along the way, you'll encounter traditional fish drying racks, a quintessential sight in the Lofoten Islands, where cod is hung to dry in the crisp Arctic air. Reddit

Even if you drive closer, the final walk along the pier is essential. This part of the path can sometimes be less cleared in winter, requiring a bit more effort, but the effort is rewarded with increasingly dramatic views of the harbor and the open sea. Reddit The walk provides a sense of anticipation and allows you to soak in the atmosphere of this working fishing town before reaching the iconic statue. Reddit
