What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Romsdalsgondolen for its absolutely stunning and breathtaking views, calling it a 'happy place' and a highlight of their Norway trip. The accessibility and the experience of reaching the mountain top are major draws, though the price is frequently noted as being on the higher side.
"A great way to get to the mountain top above Åndalsnes. Go early to avoid the tour buses, but the cars were pretty frequent. Trip Advisor suggests getting tickets in advance , which we did and never received them! Luckily the attendant at the cable car managed to find them in the system. So, don't bother buying them in advance, just get them there."
Martin Rapier
"This is where I found my happy place. Expensive but worth every penny/krone.
We set off early, only 8 people onboard going up. Incredible views, made me quite emotional. Quiet, clean air, able to roam freely without crowds. Returned to reality, just 4 of us on the gondola, so we had front seats on the way down. Would have liked to have walked down but had a cruise ship trip booked pm and wasn't sure if we could make it down in time. I highly recommend this experience."
Lynne Fleming
"Absolutely stunning views, thanks the cabelcar everyone can see out from the top of the mountain, right now it costs 560 NOK per person, but is worth it"

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
While the gondola is an experience in itself, consider the short, manageable walk to Rampestreken viewpoint. It's an adventure that kids often find thrilling, offering a unique perspective of the valley. Ensure children are supervised, especially near the viewpoints, and dress them in layers as mountain weather can change quickly.
💰 Budget Travelers
To make the most of the cost, plan to spend ample time at the top, exploring the viewpoints and enjoying the cafe. If hiking is an option, consider combining a shorter gondola ride with a hike down, or exploring other, more accessible hiking trails in the Romsdalen area that don't require the gondola.

Aim for the 'golden hour' during sunrise or sunset for the most dramatic lighting. Even on overcast days, the moody atmosphere can create compelling images. Don't forget to capture the journey itself, as the gondola cabins offer excellent frames for the passing scenery.

Navigating Crowds and Timing
Some travelers found that arriving right at opening allowed for a more intimate experience, with fewer people onboard and at the viewpoints. Similarly, visiting in the late afternoon can offer beautiful lighting for photos and a chance to catch the sunset. While some suggest booking tickets in advance, there have been reports of issues receiving them, leading many to advise purchasing tickets directly at the station.
Consider the season as well. While summer offers long daylight hours, winter can transform the landscape into a serene, snow-covered wonderland, though operating hours might be more limited. Always check the official operating hours and consider the weather forecast, as clear skies are essential for the best views.
