What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Narvik Railway Station serves as a functional gateway to stunning Arctic scenery, though it's noted for its basic amenities and sometimes uncoordinated transport links. Travelers rave about the breathtaking train journey and the surrounding natural beauty, but some find the station itself lacking in information and comfort.
"Narvick is quite peaceful small city covered with big snowy mountains.

"A grim place. Not welcoming, no information, no signposts, potholes that are bad for luggage and disabled.
Is this your visit card, Narvik?"

"The journey from Stockholm to here is stunning, especially the last 2hrs near Narvik. The station hasn't much and the cheap lockers were removed.
It's a 5 min walk to the bus at Bromsgård if you're headed to Lofoten, and you might have time to pop in to the Xtra next to the busstop, as the train is usually on time.
A 5d interrail/eurail pass journey on this amazing railway is useful (you need 2 days from central Europe to Narvik; 3 days going back; couchettes are an additional 250SEK on SJ trains 93 and 94).
Annoyingly SJ's trains and Svipper buses don't coordinate. So if one is just a bit late there is a problem. I've written to Svipper about it; they added the hospital stop and now the connection is very tight indeed."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
The most notable train route is the scenic journey from Stockholm, Sweden, which takes approximately 19 hours. This route is part of the Arctic Circle train experience. You can also connect from other parts of Norway, though direct international train services are limited.
While the journey offers stunning views, the comfort onboard can be basic. Many travelers find the reclining seats hard for long durations and recommend booking couchettes for overnight travel.
Driving to Narvik in late October or November requires caution. Winter tires are a must, and while chains might not be mandatory, they can be useful. Road conditions can be challenging due to snow and ice.
Yes, Svipper buses operate in the region, and there are connections to places like Lofoten. However, it's important to note that SJ trains and Svipper buses don't always coordinate well, so allow ample time for transfers.
While the Stockholm route is famous, you can also reach Narvik by train from other Norwegian cities, though it might involve multiple changes. The station serves as a key transport hub in the region.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Ticket prices vary depending on booking time and class. A 5-day Interrail/Eurail pass can be useful, but couchettes on SJ trains (93 and 94) incur an additional fee of approximately 250 SEK.
It is highly recommended to book train tickets in advance, especially for the popular Stockholm to Narvik route, to secure your preferred seating or couchette and potentially get better prices.
Narvik Railway Station is a public transport hub, so there are no entrance fees to access the station itself. Fees would apply to train tickets or any specific services within the station.
Operating hours for train services can vary. It's best to check the official SJ (Swedish Railways) or Vy (Norwegian Railways) websites for the most up-to-date train schedules and station opening times.
While it might be possible to purchase tickets at the station, booking in advance online is generally more reliable and often cheaper, especially for long-distance routes like Stockholm to Narvik.
🎫 📍 Onsite Experience
The station offers basic facilities, including coin-operated lockers for luggage storage. However, information and signage can be limited, and some amenities like cheap lockers have been removed.
Some reviews suggest the station can be challenging for those with luggage or mobility issues, citing potholes and a lack of clear signage. It's advisable to contact the railway operator in advance for specific accessibility needs.
Information at the station itself can be sparse. For local transport, including buses to areas like Lofoten, you may need to look for signs or inquire at nearby information points or bus stops.
Narvik Railway Station is quite basic and doesn't offer extensive dining or shopping options. You might find a small convenience store nearby, like the Xtra next to the Bromsgård bus stop.
The station is situated in a region renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, with stunning views of fjords and snow-covered mountains. The final stretch of the train journey into Narvik is particularly spectacular.
📸 📸 Photography
The station itself is functional, but the real photographic gems are the surrounding landscapes. Capture the dramatic fjords, towering mountains, and the unique Arctic light. The train journey into Narvik offers incredible vistas.
The prime time for Northern Lights photography in Narvik is during the winter months, from late autumn through early spring (roughly September to March), when the nights are long and dark.
Beyond the station, consider viewpoints overlooking the fjords and mountains. Narvikfjellet offers panoramic views, and fjord cruises provide unique perspectives for capturing wildlife and coastal scenery.
For the dramatic landscapes and potential Northern Lights, a wide-angle lens is excellent. A sturdy tripod is essential for low-light photography, especially for the Aurora. Don't forget extra batteries, as cold weather drains them quickly.
Absolutely! The train journey, particularly the last two hours into Narvik, is incredibly photogenic. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture the stunning Arctic scenery.

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
For a more structured family activity, look into fjord cruises that might offer wildlife spotting, which can be fascinating for kids. While the station itself lacks extensive child-friendly amenities, the overall experience of being in a snowy, mountainous region can be magical. Plan for shorter excursions and ensure plenty of warm breaks to keep younger travelers comfortable and happy.
❄️ Winter Travelers
When visiting during the colder months, prioritize warm, layered clothing. Thermal base layers, insulated outerwear, hats, gloves, and waterproof boots are essential. The long, dark nights increase your chances of seeing the Aurora Borealis, so keep an eye on forecasts and be prepared to venture out after dark. Consider booking couchettes on the train for a more comfortable overnight journey through the snowy terrain.

The Arctic Circle Train Experience
While the views are spectacular, the comfort of the train can be a mixed bag. Many passengers find the standard reclining seats to be quite hard and uncomfortable for the long journey, especially overnight. To enhance the travel experience, booking a couchette is highly recommended for a more restful sleep. It's also worth noting that the coordination between train services (like SJ) and bus services (like Svipper) isn't always seamless, so building in extra time for connections is a wise precaution.
This train line is not just about reaching Narvik; it's an integral part of the Arctic adventure. It connects major cities and offers a unique way to experience the vastness and beauty of the Scandinavian north. Whether you're heading to Narvik for the Northern Lights, the fjords, or simply the thrill of an Arctic journey, the train provides an unforgettable prelude.
Narvik's Natural Beauty and Activities
One of the most captivating experiences is exploring the fjords. Fjord cruises are popular, offering opportunities to witness wildlife such as sea eagles and even small whales up close. For those who enjoy a more active pursuit, fishing safaris are also available, allowing you to test your skills against the Arctic waters. The surrounding mountains, like Narvikfjellet, provide stunning panoramic views of the city, fjords, and the vast wilderness beyond, especially during the winter months when the area is blanketed in snow.
Beyond the station, Narvik serves as a gateway to experiencing the raw, untamed beauty of Northern Norway. Whether you're drawn by the promise of the Northern Lights dancing in the winter sky or the sheer majesty of the fjords, Narvik offers an immersive Arctic experience.
