What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Most visitors find the fjord cruises from Bergen to be a breathtaking and worthwhile experience, highlighting the stunning natural scenery and unique landscapes. While some find the price a bit high and the return journey repetitive, the overall consensus is positive, with many recommending it as a must-do activity in Bergen.
"Went on the 60 mins Bergen city cruise and it was excellent. Lots of space above and below deck to sit or stand depending on preference. It was a sunny day for us so very few were inside and the top deck was full. But you could always see everything and th ship was well captained so there were lots of photo opportunities.
The ship has a bit of speed to it at times which was fun and different from the typical city cruise I have been on... Not that it was too fast but just meant it for to the places in good time. Would recommend"

"Our fjord cruise experience was decent, especially since it was our first time on a cruise. We appreciated the informative commentary about the special locations and buildings we passed, and we were impressed by the speed of the cruise and the stunning views. However, I do feel it was a bit pricey, especially since the cruise follows the same route there and back, making the return trip less exciting.
One thing to note is that your experience can vary depending on where you sit or stand. If you’re on the side with fewer sights, you might feel a bit left out. For example, when a waterfall appeared on the right side, many people moved to that side of the deck. While you do get to see the same sights on the way back, it does make the initial trip less engaging if you’re not on the right side.
I recommend arriving at least an hour early. We arrived half an hour before departure, but all the window seats were already taken. Also, avoid sitting in areas with extra legroom, as people tend to walk around frequently, and it can be annoying to keep moving your legs to let them pass.
There are drinks and food available on board, but they’re quite pricey, so I suggest bringing your own snacks. Restrooms are available, which is convenient, and all the commentary was provided in English."

"We went on a rain day and we still enjoyed the cruise. it is a relaxing 3.5hrs cruise. We saw lots and lots of waterfalls along the fjord, idyllic villages, green spaces like switzerland, narrow fjord channels, etc.
The cruise took off on-time, so needed to come 20 minutes earlier to board the boat. There were plenty of seat in the ferry.
Top deck outdoor space is mostly for standing only. The ferry is clean and provided bathrooms also. I think that they sell food also, but we did not buy anything."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Tips for families: Bring plenty of snacks and drinks, as onboard options can be pricey. Dress everyone in warm, waterproof layers, as it can get chilly and wet on deck. Ensure children are supervised closely, especially on the upper decks. Some boats have indoor seating areas, which can be a good refuge if the weather turns.
💰 Budget Travelers
Look for deals by booking in advance or comparing prices between different operators. Consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring or fall) when prices might be slightly lower. Be prepared for changing light conditions and potential rain. A wide-angle lens is ideal for capturing the vastness of the fjords. Consider bringing a polarizing filter to enhance the blues of the water and sky. If conditions are challenging, embrace the moody atmosphere that rain can bring to the Norwegian landscape.

The Mostraumen Fjord Cruise Experience
Travelers often praise the immersive experience of sailing through these tight passages, where the sheer scale of the cliffs is awe-inspiring. The cruise typically includes informative commentary in English, detailing the local geography, history, and folklore. While the views are spectacular, it's worth noting that the return journey covers the same route, which some find less engaging than the outward trip.
To make the most of your Mostraumen cruise, it's recommended to board early to secure a prime spot on the upper deck for unobstructed views. Dress in layers, as the weather can change rapidly, and consider bringing your own snacks and drinks to manage costs. Despite potential price concerns, the sheer natural spectacle makes this a highly recommended activity for anyone visiting Bergen.
Navigating Bergen's Fjord Tours: Operators and Options
Beyond the standard Mostraumen cruise, Bergen serves as a gateway to longer and more extensive fjord experiences. While not typically departing directly from Bergen for multi-day trips, it's a common starting point for those looking to explore further afield. For instance, the Hurtigruten coastal ferry offers a unique way to see the fjords, acting as both transport and a scenic journey, though it's not a traditional cruise. Some travelers also opt for tours that combine fjord cruising with other activities like the Flåm Railway, though these might involve longer travel times.
When choosing an operator, consider the duration of the tour, the specific fjords visited, and onboard amenities. Reading recent reviews can provide valuable insights into the current quality of service and the overall experience. Remember that fjord cruises operate year-round, offering different but equally stunning perspectives in every season.
The Allure of Bergen's Historic Bryggen
Bryggen is more than just a picturesque facade; it's a vibrant area filled with artisan shops, galleries, cafes, and museums. The Hanseatic Museum provides a deep dive into the lives of the merchants who once dominated trade here. The unique atmosphere, especially when viewed from the harbor, has even drawn comparisons to the aesthetic of Wes Anderson films.
Many fjord cruises depart from or pass by the Bryggen area, making it easy to combine a historical exploration with a scenic boat trip. The proximity of Bryggen to the cruise departure points makes it a perfect pre- or post-cruise activity, allowing visitors to soak in both the maritime heritage and the natural wonders of the region.
