Reviews Summary

Fjellheisen is a must-visit for its breathtaking panoramic views of Tromsø and the surrounding Arctic landscape, especially stunning at sunset and for Northern Lights. While the cable car ride is short and the views are unparalleled, visitors should be prepared for unpredictable weather, potentially long queues, and limited seating at the on-site cafe. Reddit

"This is a MUST when visiting Tromso but it is very weather dependent and the weather in Tromso changes radically from minute to minute so just keep that in mind. On the day I visited, it was sunny and clear when I took the cable car up but within an hour, the mountain was totally shrouded in clouds and it was snowing heavily. However, the skies would clear up every 15 minutes or so. I got a seat by the window and stayed for a few hours. The cafe is fine - I got a sandwich and a coffee but I wouldn't plan on having a real dinner up there. THE BIGGEST TIP: Make sure you book a roundtrip on the Shuttle Bus which takes you right to the cable car from the Tourist Office in the Harbor area. I had taken one of the regular city buses but they leave you off close to the Arctic Cathedral and then you have a fairly strenuous hike (in the snow and ice) up the mountain. I did book the shuttle bus for my return to the city. The weather the last few days I will be here does not look promising but if it clears up, I plan to make one last trip up the mountain. It is also an excellent spot to see the Northern Lights if the weather is clear. The same night (March 13) that I was on a tour an hour out of Tromso, many people posted their aurora sightings on top of Stortsteinen mountain. NOTE: I did make a second trip up the mountain and this time booked online for both the cable car and return trip on the bus and it made everything 100% better."

"On 26th March 2025 I visited Fjellheisen and it was an amazing experience! The cable car is incredibly well-maintained, which made me feel safe and comfortable during the ride. The charges are fair, considering the breathtaking views you get at the top, especially at night.

Speaking of views, they are absolutely stunning! The viewing point is perfectly situated at the vantage point, allowing for some truly unforgettable scenery. It’s a great spot not only for enjoying the views but also for skiing adventures. Plus, I appreciated that the washrooms were clean and well-kept.

Overall, I highly recommend Fjellheisen for anyone looking to enjoy the natural beauty of Tromsø while having a fun and adventurous day!"

"The cable car is not available. They're doing repairs or something.

So, we climbed a bit by foot, on the trial followed by the sherpa steps. Not all the way to the top, because it is quite difficult... Also, there are too many mosquitos all around, the size of overweight trolls, and they are insatiable.

We took some good pictures though..."

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Fjellheisen offers a fantastic experience for families. The short, exciting cable car ride is usually a hit with children, providing a sense of adventure. Instagram The panoramic views are captivating for all ages, and the open space at the top allows kids to explore (under supervision, of course). Instagram Pack plenty of warm layers, as it can get quite cold, and consider bringing snacks or enjoying a treat at the Fjellstua cafe, though seating can be limited. Reddit Booking tickets in advance is a good strategy to minimize waiting times, which can be challenging with young children. TikTok

Deep Dives

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Experiencing the Views

The primary draw of Fjellheisen is undoubtedly the spectacular panoramic views from Storsteinen mountain. At 421 meters above sea level, the dual-gondola cable car whisks you up in just four minutes, offering breathtaking vistas of Tromsø city, the surrounding fjords, and the majestic snow-capped mountains. Instagram+1 Whether it's the crisp daylight, the dramatic hues of sunset, or the ethereal glow of the Arctic blue hour, the scenery is consistently awe-inspiring. TikTokInstagram Many visitors describe the view as one of the most beautiful they've ever witnessed. Instagram

Beyond the visual feast, the mountain station provides a comfortable vantage point to soak in the Arctic atmosphere. On clear nights, Fjellheisen transforms into a prime location for Northern Lights hunting. The elevated position and lack of light pollution make it an excellent spot to witness the aurora borealis dance across the sky, provided the conditions are right. TikTokInstagram It's a truly magical experience that many travelers seek out when visiting Tromsø during the winter months. Instagram

For those seeking a bit more adventure, there are opportunities for winter hiking and skiing around the mountain, though this requires appropriate gear and experience. The Fjellstua cafe at the top offers a place to warm up with a hot drink and a snack while enjoying the views, though seating can be limited. Reddit

Navigating Crowds and Timing

Fjellheisen is a highly popular attraction, and as such, crowds can be a significant factor, especially during peak tourist seasons and around holidays like New Year's Eve. TikTokReddit Videos show long queues forming, sometimes stretching down the parking area and along the road. TikTok To mitigate this, booking tickets in advance, either online or through the Troms Billett app, is strongly advised. TikTokReddit The cable car itself can feel packed, with visitors noting they were squeezed in like sardines to maximize capacity and minimize wait times. Reddit

Timing your visit is crucial for a more pleasant experience. Weekday mornings are generally less crowded than evenings or weekends. Reddit If your goal is to see the Northern Lights, clear evenings between October and March are ideal, but be prepared for company. TikTokReddit The weather in Tromsø is notoriously fickle; it can change from clear skies to heavy snow and clouds within an hour. Reddit This unpredictability means that even if you plan for a specific time, the actual view might be obscured. Flexibility and checking the weather forecast frequently are key. Reddit

Consider using the shuttle bus service from the Tromsø Tourist Office. This service not only takes you directly to the cable car base but also helps manage the flow of visitors. Reddit While the cable car ride is short, the overall experience can be extended by waiting times, so allocate ample time for your visit, especially if you plan to enjoy the cafe or simply soak in the views without feeling rushed.
