Allow Extra Time for Birds

The rainforest is alive with birdsong. Stop and listen – you might even spot a rare Rowi kiwi! :bird:

Don't Skip the Beach

Just a 5-minute walk from the trailhead, the beach offers a peaceful contrast to the forest walk. TikTok

Checking out coastal village of Ōkārito (30min North of Franz Josef). It’s forest sanctuary to about 400 Rowi, the rarest species of Kiwi. 💚 I ran up the Trig track while the rest of the fam explored the wetlands and beach. No Kiwi spotted ☺️ but other bird life was plentiful and the forest beautiful. Only 4k out and back, but like everything around here, it’s rocky and steep. Worth it of course...

"We did this walk late this morning, through to early afternoon. It took us over 2 hours, but we were stopping to admire the bush and the birds. And when we got to the top, the cloud was clearing and we got great views of some snow-capped mountains (glaciers). Recommended, provided your fitness level (knees etc) allows for some steep inclines. The path is well set out."
