Reviews Summary

Treble Cone is lauded for its challenging terrain, stunning views, and lack of lift queues, making it a favorite for intermediate to expert skiers and snowboarders. However, some visitors find the piste signage confusing and the access road difficult. It's generally not recommended for beginners.

"Awesome place for training off piste and bumps. No waits at lifts unless the locals comes down for fresh snow. Very few begineers, mostly intermediates and above.. Race teams train here a lot. Kids on race teams like 10-12 going like 70km/hr is common. So most ppl are in control. Not a tourist resort. They can stick to easier mountains near queenstown... Otherwise they will struggle even on the green."

Eddie Yap

"As compared to other ski fields, we personally still prefer Cardrona. The route up/down is more difficult here, single lane (2-way) at some point. However, there is less crowd here and can have better fun."

Michael

"Fantastic skiing, loved it, a great day.
But the biggest downside is the dreadful piste signage. Yes, a lot of locals ski here and know their way around. But not everyone is a local - we had to make our way back to base in thick cloud, even on piste there were very few markers, so it was luck and experience that got us down safely."

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Treble Cone is generally not the best choice for families with very young children or beginner skiers. The resort's terrain is predominantly intermediate to advanced, and the beginner areas are limited. Reddit If your family consists of experienced skiers or snowboarders, they might enjoy the challenge, but for those learning, nearby Cardrona or Coronet Peak might offer a more suitable and less intimidating environment. Consider packing plenty of snacks and warm drinks, as on-mountain dining can be expensive. :apple: :hot_beverage:

💰 Budget Travelers

While Treble Cone offers incredible terrain, it can be a pricier option. Lift tickets are comparable to other major ski fields, and on-mountain food is also at resort prices. Reddit To save money, consider packing your own lunch and snacks. Freeride Paradise: Treble Cone's Reputation

Treble Cone has carved out a reputation as a premier destination for freeride skiing and snowboarding in New Zealand. Unlike many resorts that focus on groomed runs, Treble Cone boasts challenging natural terrain, including steep chutes, bowls, and off-piste areas that attract experienced riders. The Saddle Basin is particularly famous for its demanding lines and the opportunity for backcountry-style skiing within resort boundaries. This focus on natural snow and challenging terrain means that while it might be intimidating for beginners, it's a dream for those looking to push their limits. TikTokInstagramReddit

The resort actively hosts freeride events, such as the Backcountry Invitational, which draws top talent and showcases the incredible potential of the mountain. Instagram This commitment to freeride culture is evident in the types of runs available and the general atmosphere of the resort, which tends to attract a more adventurous crowd. If you're looking to hone your off-piste skills or simply experience some of the most exciting natural terrain in New Zealand, Treble Cone should be high on your list.

It's important to note that due to the nature of the terrain, safety is paramount. Always check avalanche conditions, ski within your abilities, and consider hiring a guide if you're new to off-piste skiing. The resort's signage can also be a challenge, especially in poor visibility, so having a good sense of direction or a reliable navigation app is advisable. Reddit

Navigating Treble Cone: Tips for a Smooth Visit

Treble Cone offers a unique skiing experience, but it comes with its own set of considerations. One of the most frequently mentioned points by visitors is the challenging access road. It's a single-lane road for a significant portion, and conditions can be icy or snowy, requiring careful driving and potentially a 4WD vehicle. Reddit Many recommend checking road conditions before heading up and considering shuttle services if you're not confident driving in such conditions. This is a crucial piece of advice to avoid any pre-trip stress. :car: :warning:

Once on the mountain, piste signage can be a point of confusion, particularly for those unfamiliar with the resort. While locals know their way, visitors might find it difficult to navigate, especially in low visibility. Reddit It's wise to have a trail map handy and be aware of your surroundings. Despite these challenges, the lack of queues at the lifts is a significant advantage, allowing for more time on the slopes. Reddit This is a trade-off that many visitors appreciate, especially compared to more crowded resorts.

Treble Cone is also known for its race teams and training, meaning you'll often see young, skilled skiers moving at high speeds. While this indicates a high level of skill on the mountain, it's something to be aware of, especially on the main runs. Reddit The resort is generally less crowded with casual tourists and more populated by serious skiers and snowboarders, contributing to a different, more focused atmosphere. Reddit :ski_lift: :star:
