"We had our NZ holiday finale two night stay in a motel facing the extremely scenic Buffalo Beach. Not only a terrific beach but its got a great walkway going right into the village. Just opposite our motel was a memorial to the Buffalo sinking in 1840. The ship was anchored in Mercury Bay loaded with Kauri when a gale parted her from her cables. All the crew except two were saved, but she herself was a total loss. A tsunami in 1960 briefly exposed the wreck as the water retreated. People who ran out to see it had to retreat again as the sea level returned to normal"
