Come take a ride with me in our back yard at Kiwi North Museum. Today was a fabulous day being out in nature in Whangarei. This morning while waiting for my train ride to join the volunteers. I had the pleasure of having a conversation with two old school gentlemen probably in their mid 80s that knew a lot about the history of these trains, the railways and Whenua ( land ) that Mahi ( work ) tha...

"This place is amazing! I love the work that they do for the animals there !! They have a hospital and I take care of any sick or injured animal. And then they free them to the wild. We were so lucky to get to see a low bird !! We were able to touch it and take pictures and videos!! They work by donation!! Please make sure you donate what you can !!"

"We had a really lovely time here. The lady on the front desk gave us loads of recommendations of what to do in the local area and the ranger was amazing. He answered so many questions, tried to help us find all the animals and was so polite. Very informative and friendly, he really knew his stuff! We weren’t allowed to take pictures in the Kiwi room but we spent 20+ minutes watching him run around the enclosure. He even pecked at the window right by our faces! 🥹"

The Elusive Kiwi: A Nocturnal Wonder

Seeing a kiwi is a bucket-list item for many visiting New Zealand, and Kiwi North offers a dedicated habitat for these unique birds. Because kiwis are nocturnal and shy, the viewing area is kept very dim. Visitors are advised to allow at least 5-10 minutes for their eyes to adjust to the darkness to fully appreciate the kiwi's movements. The best opportunities to see them active are during their scheduled feeding times, typically around 11 AM and 3 PM. Rangers are often present during these times to answer questions and share insights into kiwi behavior and conservation efforts. Remember, photography is strictly prohibited within the Kiwi House to avoid disturbing the birds. Reddit+2

Kiwi North plays a crucial role in the conservation of these endangered native birds. They often house injured or sick kiwis in their hospital, with the goal of rehabilitating them and releasing them back into the wild. This dedication to conservation is a significant aspect of the visitor experience and a reason why donations are so highly valued. Reddit

Beyond the kiwi, the facility may also house other native reptiles like geckos, offering a broader glimpse into New Zealand's unique fauna. These smaller enclosures provide further opportunities to learn about the country's biodiversity. Reddit

Stepping Back in Time: Heritage Park and Museum

Kiwi North is more than just a wildlife sanctuary; it's a living museum showcasing the rich history of Northland. The park features a collection of relocated 19th-century buildings, each offering a window into the past. You can explore historic homes, a schoolhouse, and other structures that tell the story of early settlement in the region. These buildings provide a tangible connection to the area's heritage, allowing visitors to imagine life as it was centuries ago. Reddit

The museum itself houses a variety of artifacts and exhibits that delve deeper into Northland's history, from Māori culture to colonial times. A particularly impressive exhibit is the complete skeleton of a Moa, a giant extinct bird native to New Zealand. This provides a fascinating educational opportunity, especially for families and those interested in natural history. Reddit

A major draw for families and train enthusiasts is the miniature railway. These charming trains offer rides around the heritage park, adding a fun and nostalgic element to the visit.
