Reviews Summary

Nikau Cave is a unique and authentic Kiwi experience, praised for its stunning natural beauty and warm hospitality. Visitors highlight the adventurous cave tour and the breathtaking views from the cafe. While some note potential waits for food and the rustic nature of the accommodation, the overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, emphasizing the genuine charm and hardworking spirit of the owners.

"Stayed overnight here. What a great place to stay. The night is absolutely quiet as you are in the middle of nowhere. In the morning you wake up to the great golden view of the limestone hills and the grazing sheep. The host is very friendly. Also have mention the great and quiet scenery of the road to this place. Then you can have their roasted coffee for breakfast."

"This has been on our bucket list forever since seeing this place on seven sharp and today we finally did it. It was such am amazing experience. The cave tour was great and it was awesome to see spiders, cave Weta, many glow worms and we waited for Eddie the cave eel but he didn't want to appear today. Some spaces in the cave were tight and went through water, but Phillip and his trainee guide helped us feel confident and safe. Afterwards, we went to the Cafe for a very tasty lunch which we also enjoyed. Totally recommend this experience. It is amazing and well worth it."

"Stopped in for the weekend as part of a rally event in Port Waikato, and Anne & Phil could not have been more welcoming to our group of four. I was here about six years ago for work and never forgot the beautiful cathedral window in the café, and it is just as stunning today.

Our accommodation was a two-bedroom apartment upstairs, with a queen and two singles. The singles were a bit of a squeeze for our guys, but Anne offered other options but they were happy enough and did not want to change. There is also a bathroom upstairs with extra showers and toilets downstairs, which was really handy for a group.

Meals did the trick each night for our crew. Breakfast was the real highlight with Anne’s homemade bread and kiwifruit jam. They roast their own coffee beans on-site too, and there is a proper coffee machine, so you get a good coffee in the morning.

Sitting outside at night was magic. We saw the biggest, brightest shooting star (thought it was Guy Fawkes for a second) along with the sound of moreporks and the stream running nearby.

Some of the low-star reviews here feel a bit unfair. This place is in the middle of nowhere, and Anne and Phil are in their late 70s and still work harder than most people half their age. Between shearing sheep to support their family farm and local community, they also run the Nikau Cave tours. It is not the Ritz, but if you want somewhere remote, homely and genuine, this is exactly that.

Nothing was too much trouble. I even got to wash my race gear and there was a washing line ready to go. And for anyone in motorsport, the car park is huge, so trailers are no problem.

There can be a bit of a wait for food, so if you have kids it pays to bring a few snacks. That is not a complaint, just being prepared.

A great spot with real character. People need to be a bit more realistic about what this place is trying to offer, because what they do provide is honest, hardworking Kiwi service and hospitality."
