What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Picton Marina is praised for its serene beauty and picturesque waterfront, offering a calming atmosphere and lovely coastal walks. While many enjoy its role as a gateway to the Marlborough Sounds and appreciate the local markets, some boat owners find marina management increasingly challenging.

"A serene quiet and just overall calming place to sit and watch the world go by.
Cruise ships stop by and provide a nice economic injection to the place.
Great lions market with local arts and craft to bring home as memorobilia"
Hoe Bing Lo
"Picton is for many, Kiwis and tourists alike a place to pass through rather than a place to linger. This is a bit unfair since Picton is after all in the Sounds. There are quite a few walking tracks between Picton and Waikawa and both have pretty Marinas. We now generally stop in Picton before forging on to our next destination and believe it is worth it. The ray in the picture is an Eagle Ray shot in Picton Marina"

Deep Dives
In-depth insights and expert knowledge
Navigating the Marinas: Picton vs. Waikawa
Waikawa Marina, located a short drive or walk from Picton, is a larger facility and often the go-to for boat maintenance and repairs. Recent reviews suggest that environmental regulations have made boat upkeep more complex, often requiring boats to be hauled out at Waikawa, leading to increased hassle and expense for owners. This has led some to feel that Marlborough Marinas are less welcoming to boats than they once were.
For visitors, both marinas provide picturesque views of yachts and the surrounding Marlborough Sounds. A walk between the two can be a pleasant way to spend an afternoon, offering different perspectives of the marine life and landscape.
The Ferry Experience: A Crucial Connection
Travelers often express frustration when ferries are sold out, seeking local tips for alternatives or last-minute options. The advice is consistent: plan ahead. If you find yourself in a bind, exploring local transport or adjusting your travel dates might be necessary.
For those who secure a spot, the ferry ride itself is an experience. It's a chance to relax, enjoy the scenery, and transition between the North and South Islands. The arrival into Picton Marina is particularly scenic, setting the tone for a visit to the Marlborough region.
