"🚨 Story time at Smallgusta 🚨
‘No accountability, disgusting hostile attitude, the owners should be ashamed’
About a year ago, I saw this awesome-looking mini golf course in Oropi on Facebook. I’d never been out that way, but my partner and I had talked about checking it out for ages. So you can imagine how excited I was when the other day, I started a new job down Oropi Road and drove past a sign that said “Smallgusta.” I got home and told my partner, “I found that place we talked about! I’m gonna stop in on my way to work tomorrow and ask about pricing and booking.” I’ve played a lot of golf and mini putt around the Bay, so this was almost like a bucket list spot for me.
Next morning, I pull in to check it out, but see a sign saying they open at 10am, so I decide to turn around and come back later. I turn around at the first corner, do a three-point turn (like anyone would), and head back out. Then this lady pulls up in a black Holden SUV, says she followed me, and starts questioning what I’m doing. I explain I was just stopping by to check it out, saw the opening time, and turned around to leave. At first I understood the suspicion, no big deal — but then she accused me of driving up to the house, saying, “I caught you.” I told her what she actually saw was me reversing to turn around, but she wasn’t interested in hearing anything. Her attitude was hostile, and she shut me down mid-explanation.
I’m a proud Māori male in my late 20s, driving a nice tradesman ute, and I was apparently “caught” doing something wrong just for stopping in early by mistake. The whole thing felt off. I told her she’d just ruined my day — I’d been genuinely looking forward to this visit, and my partner too, because we both love golf. She just hit me with a sarcastic “sweet as” and kept that attitude strong. At one point she said she was just a worker — then later tell’s me that she’s actually the owner (Renee Agnew). Also, to the poor girl sitting in the car during all this — I apologise.
Anyway, I go to work, then head back around 10am like I originally planned. Same lady again. I asked to speak to someone else, but she said it was just her. I asked about the other owner (Dave Agnew), as she told me there were 2, and she wouldn’t give me contact info. I asked the questions I came to ask, then calmly made a complaint. I never raised my voice or insulted her — I even said I understood her concern about thefts — but told her that the way she spoke to me, especially after I explained myself, felt like profiling. She didn’t like hearing that. Maybe I was out of line, but it’s how I felt.
She gave me a half-hearted apology, shook my hand while looking at the ground, and said, “Hope you come back as a customer.” Not meaningful at all.
Later that day, I tried calling Dave Agnew twice — since he likes replying to 1-star reviews saying “give me a call,” so I did. No answer, no reply.
So yeah — I guess nothing’s gonna come of this, and I didn’t even get a chance to play - but instead got treated like a criminal for being curious and stopping in early by mistake."

"Just perfect!
We had booked a private pool for 1/2 hr which was exactly enough time to sit and enjoy the lovely warm water. The pool was spotlessly clean with its own shower and toilet. We decided to stay for an early lunch and shared a kiwi burger which was delicious. The coffee was strong and hot. The staff were friendly and welcoming. We would definitely recommend"
