A Glimpse into History

Percy Scenic Reserve is steeped in history, dating back to the 1840s when the Percy family settled in the Hutt Valley. They established a flour mill powered by the local stream, which became a vital social hub for the early settlers. Later, Joseph Percy's grandsons transformed the area into private gardens, cultivating a diverse collection of native and exotic plants. This horticultural legacy is still evident today. Reddit

In 1939, a portion of these gardens was gifted to the government with the stipulation that it be maintained as a scenic reserve. The remaining land was later acquired, and Percy Scenic Reserve was officially opened to the public in 1949. The reserve now proudly features a replica of the historic water wheel, serving as a tangible reminder of its industrial past and the Percy family's contribution to the region. Reddit

Visitors can explore the remnants of this history while enjoying the natural beauty. The reserve is also a haven for native birdlife. Keep an eye and ear out for the distinctive calls of kererū and tūī, and the flitting fantails (piwakawaka). You might also spot common skinks basking in the sun. At night, the reserve transforms into a magical realm, illuminated by glow worms and home to various species of weta, New Zealand's fascinating endemic insects. InstagramReddit

For those interested in conservation, the reserve includes a plant nursery dedicated to raising native species. This initiative supports regeneration efforts within the valley, ensuring the continued health and growth of the local ecosystem. It’s a testament to the ongoing commitment to preserving this precious natural environment. Reddit
