What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the stunning mirror-like reflections and beautiful mountain scenery at Lake Hayes, making it a must-do for photographers and nature lovers. While the walk is generally easy and enjoyable, some note the lack of shade and occasional shared road sections as minor drawbacks. Overall, it's highly recommended for its picturesque views and recreational opportunities.
"I don’t have the lucky to see the reflection so lake is okie. Difficult to find the entrance and exit due to all private properties around the lake. Appreciate all the green and blue water, maybe next time…"
Truc Nguyen
"Enjoyed this loop track so much! 😍 Pretty tiring though as I unknowingly chose one of the hottest summer days in the country to do this loop track, but the pockets of amazing views of the lake and mountains made the trek worthwhile.
Best to take on a cloudy day or early in the morning as there’s barely any trees that could protect you from the intense NZ sun.
Despite the heat, the walk was relatively easy, there were very short, very slight inclines but nothing unmanageable. Even saw a number of folks having a jog or taking a leisurely bike ride (easy! 😬)
Only reason why I didn’t give a perfect 5 stars rating is because there’s a short portion of the track where people had to share with passing cars… I could literally taste sand in my mouth whenever this happened.
Nevertheless, highly recommended! 👍"

The Allure of Mirror Lake Reflections
To capture these iconic shots, timing is crucial. Visitors are advised to visit during the early morning hours when the lake is most likely to be glassy. Even on a slightly breezy day, the reflections can be distorted, so patience and a bit of luck with the weather are key. Photographers often use polarizing filters to enhance the colors and reduce glare, bringing out the full vibrancy of the reflected scene.
Beyond the mirror effect, the changing seasons offer diverse photographic opportunities. Autumn brings vibrant foliage, while winter can see a dusting of snow on the surrounding peaks, adding a different kind of magic to the landscape. The presence of birdlife also provides opportunities for wildlife photography.

The loop typically takes between 2 to 3 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to admire the views or take photos.
For those looking for a more challenging outing, the track can be combined with other trails in the Queenstown area, such as those leading to Arrowtown. It's also a great starting point for activities like kayaking or paddleboarding on the lake itself.
Best Practices for a Comfortable Visit
Comfortable footwear is a must, even if you're just planning a casual walk. The terrain is generally easy, but good shoes will enhance your experience. For those planning to cycle, ensure your bike is in good condition. :athletic_shoe:
