It’s called the Windows walk 🪟 We visited Karangahake Gorge a couple of years ago and sadly this track was closed due to damage - so we were so excited to be able to do it this time!! The other side of the Gorge is closed now but highly recommend coming just for the Windows Walk. Make sure to bring a torch 🔦 #coromandel #windowswalk #nzwalks

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the unique 'windows' in the old gold mining tunnels, offering breathtaking gorge views and a strong sense of history. The walk is generally considered easy and enjoyable, though some sections can be wet and muddy, making proper footwear and a torch essential. Occasional track closures can be a minor disappointment, but the overall experience is highly recommended for its adventurous feel and scenic beauty.

"We’ve been here a few times, and it’s always a great experience. But this visit was extra memorable because my kids are older now and appreciated visiting a historic place. Beautiful views, a nice spot for a hike — definitely a must-visit!

You can use the toilets before or after the hike. Be sure to bring a torch for the tunnels. There were large puddles in the middle, so we had to carefully navigate along the sides, which was fine — it added to the adventure.

One thing I noticed, though, is that most of the signs had graffiti on them, which made me sad. I hope people will respect the place.

We came on a public holiday (Labour Day), so there was no parking available when we arrived just before lunchtime. I’d suggest coming earlier next time if you want to secure a spot right away. Otherwise, wait a bit — people often start leaving, and you can grab their parking space."

The Gold Mining Heritage

The Karangahake Gorge was once a bustling hub for gold mining, and the Windows Walk is a direct link to this fascinating past. The tunnels you walk through were originally part of the gold mining operations, carved into the hillsides to access ore. These tunnels, with their strategically placed 'windows,' were likely used for ventilation and to provide light for miners. The remnants of old mining equipment and tramways scattered throughout the gorge further tell the story of this era. Instagram+1

Visitors often remark on the sense of history felt while walking these paths. The sheer effort and ingenuity involved in creating these tunnels without modern machinery is awe-inspiring. It’s a tangible connection to the lives of the prospectors and workers who shaped this landscape over a century ago. InstagramReddit

Beyond the Windows Walk, exploring other parts of the Karangahake Gorge reveals more about its gold mining legacy, including remnants of processing plants and old railway lines. It’s a journey back in time, offering a unique perspective on New Zealand’s industrial history. Reddit

Navigating the Tunnels and Trails

The ground can also be wet and muddy, making gum boots or waterproof footwear highly recommended. Watch your head, as some tunnel ceilings are not very high. InstagramReddit+1
