We love bushwalks, so we dragged the family and went on an adventure. Elven had never been to Pukemokemoke Bush Reserve, so we thought it was time to give it a try. He hated the drive (he goes into panic mode for any trip over 20min in any car that is not mine). He was a bit overwhelmed at the start by all the new smells, sounds, and sights, so we took it slow and seemed to love it. We even got t...

"A magical place! I climb up carrying my toddler in my hiking carrier. There are quite a few steps but it's not difficult. Hour round trip with a snack and a break to soak in the 360 view up the top. Well worth it. 30 mins drive from central Hamilton. Will return again soon ❤️"

Sophie Dewstow-Wright

"Epic hike to a beautiful view. Make sure you use the footwear cleaner system, it’s a pretty cool system and it protects the Kauri trees in the area. Just don’t slip on the step after you have sanitised your shoes.
The walking track is amazing and the bush is beautiful. Real good kiwi experience. There are a few steps, so the walk is probably not for those with push chairs). The lookout at the top is awesome."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating the Tracks

Pukemokemoke Bush Reserve offers a well-defined loop track, perfect for a moderate hike. The trail includes a significant number of steps, particularly on the route to the summit, which provides a good cardiovascular workout. For those seeking varied terrain, the North Eastern route down from the summit is characterized by clay and tree roots, offering a more natural bushwalking experience. Visitors should be prepared for potentially slippery conditions, especially after rainfall, as the clay can become quite treacherous. Reddit

While the reserve is generally well-maintained by a non-profit organization, some sections might feel less 'damp and undergrowth-rich' compared to other Waikato native bush areas, possibly due to historical land management practices. Despite this, the abundance of birdlife and the rewarding summit views make the trek worthwhile. The presence of gravel on some tracks has been noted by some as potentially increasing slipperiness, so sturdy footwear is highly recommended. Reddit

For those looking for a slightly different experience, some visitors have explored routes like the 'Kauri Grove' track, which involves descending and ascending. While the reserve is described as a loop, getting slightly disoriented is possible, so having a basic map or GPS can be helpful. The logger clearing area is also highlighted as a pleasant spot to relax, particularly for birdwatching. Reddit

A Haven for Native Birds

Pukemokemoke Bush Reserve is a true paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The air is often filled with the constant symphony of native birdsong, creating a truly immersive experience. Visitors frequently report spotting a variety of species, including the vibrant Tūī, the striking Kererū (New Zealand pigeon), and the energetic Fantail. InstagramReddit

Beyond these commonly seen birds, some visitors have even reported hearing the distinctive calls of Kākā, a native parrot, suggesting a healthy and diverse ecosystem within the reserve. The presence of these native species underscores the importance of conservation efforts in the area. Photographers will find ample opportunities to capture these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat. InstagramReddit

To enhance your birdwatching experience, consider bringing binoculars. The best times for observing bird activity are often during the early morning and late afternoon, when they are most active. The reserve's commitment to preserving native flora also contributes to its appeal as a habitat for these precious avian residents. Reddit
