"difficulty: moderate
time: 3 hr return started around 9:45am, car park was practically empty
Wonderful hike with amazing views at the top, we went after a rainy night so it was incredibly muddy along the way. Eastern track down through the western track (it’s like a small trickle of waterfall and mud through out). Highly recommend even to go to the Lake Wanaka lookout if you can’t make it all the way up!"

"Great walk up Rocky Mountain. Good views of diamond lake and Lake Wanaka - pretty spectacular. Doesn’t really matter whether you take the eastern or western route up - both have challenging parts but are all ok. Our family loved it."
Craig Stewart
"Such a beautiful place. The trail is really fun, the views are amazing. Just be careful in winter, 90% of the trail after the lake viewpoint is full of ice. Still practicable but don't forget micro-spikes."

Navigating the Trails: Diamond Lake Circuit vs. Rocky Mountain Track
The Rocky Mountain Track, while sharing the same trailhead, is a more challenging ascent. It's a popular choice for those seeking a more strenuous hike with equally rewarding, if not more expansive, views. Families often enjoy this track, finding it a good balance of effort and scenic payoff. Both tracks are generally well-marked, but the terrain can vary significantly, from muddy paths to rocky ascents.
When planning your hike, consider the weather. After rain, the trails can become quite muddy, and in winter, ice can make sections treacherous, necessitating micro-spikes. Arriving early is recommended to secure parking and enjoy the tranquility before the area becomes busier.
The Importance of Footwear and Winter Preparedness
For those planning a visit during the winter months, ice becomes a major factor, particularly on the higher sections of the trails, including the path to the lake viewpoint. Travelers strongly advise carrying micro-spikes or similar traction devices to ensure safe passage and prevent slips and falls. Without them, the winter hike can become impractical or even dangerous.
Beyond footwear, it's wise to dress in layers, as the weather in the mountains can change rapidly. Checking the forecast before you go and being prepared for varying conditions will significantly enhance your experience on the Diamond Lake Circuit.
Capturing the Magic: Photography at Diamond Lake
Beyond the main lookout, the Wanaka Lookout offers a more serene perspective, showcasing the beauty of Lake Wanaka itself. Even if you don't complete the entire circuit, this spot is highly recommended for its picturesque scenery. The unique shapes of the mountains and the reflections in the water create dramatic and memorable photographic opportunities. Sunset can be particularly spectacular here, painting the sky with vibrant colors.
For the best photographic results, consider visiting in the early morning for clear light and fewer crowds, or in the late afternoon to capture the warm glow of the golden hour. Remember to bring your camera and be prepared to spend time framing the breathtaking landscapes.
