What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Callery Gorge Walk to be a rewarding, albeit more challenging than expected, moderate hike. The stunning rainforest scenery and the dramatic gorge views from the suspension bridge are consistently praised. Some note the trail's steep and rocky sections require good footwear and can be tiring on the return journey.
"Easy to moderate walk, a few steep sections and about 40min each way. Ok in the wet if you use normal caution.
After rains the river will be a very light grey. Access is easy because the entrance is on the edge of Franz Josef town near the wildlife center."
Shaun Russell
"Stated as an Easy walk, it's a full on 40 mins+ and the same on the return. The start is on a gravel path that climbs steadily. The first wooden bridge passes over a lovely little waterfall which cascades over moss covered boulders. From here the trail becomes rocks, tree roots and fairly narrow and steep for the rest of the walk. The swing bridge over the gorge is blocked at the other end but you can walk over to get a view down to the river. Be prepared for a real hike on the way back! Such a varied walk. With a great view as your reward."
Catherine Welsh
"A wonderful moderate hike (out-and-back, approximately 3 miles total). Shares the same starting route as the Tunnels Trail along a path that seems like it’s frequently used for maintenance vehicles. It begins with a slow climb, splitting from the Tunnels Trail, eventually flattening out before a sharp descent/ascent.
About halfway, the real fun begins as the service road ends. The hike becomes moderately steep with a narrow path and rocks and stones perfect for rolling ankles. Recommend bringing a walking stick for this latter half.
Hike ends at a suspension bridge with a direct view of the gorge. You can also trek down to the mouth of the river. Absolutely worth it especially if you have just a short window of sunlight."

Navigating the Callery Gorge Trail
However, about halfway through, the trail transforms. The service road ends, and the path becomes significantly more challenging. Expect narrow, steep sections with rocks and tree roots, requiring careful footing. Many visitors recommend bringing a walking stick for added stability during this more demanding part of the hike.
The effort is well worth it, culminating in a suspension bridge that provides a dramatic view directly down into the gorge. You can also venture further down to the mouth of the Waiho River for a different perspective.
The Magic of the Rainforest
The air is often damp and cool, and the ground is carpeted with vibrant green mosses that cling to boulders and tree trunks. Sunlight filters through the thick canopy, creating a dappled, ethereal light that enhances the mystical atmosphere. Keep an eye out for friendly native birds, like the fantail, which are known to accompany hikers along the path.
This section of the walk is a feast for the senses, with the sounds of nature and the rich, earthy smell of the forest. It's a stark contrast to the more open gravel path at the beginning and offers a truly immersive natural experience.
Understanding the Waiho River's Mood
For the most visually striking experience, it's best to visit the Callery Gorge Walk after a dry spell. On clear days, especially with good sunlight, the glacial meltwater can reveal stunning shades of turquoise and blue, creating a breathtaking contrast with the surrounding green gorge.
While the river is a central feature of the gorge, swimming is not recommended due to the strong currents and icy temperatures. However, the views from the suspension bridge and the river mouth offer ample opportunity to appreciate its raw power and beauty from a safe distance.
