Navigating the Trails

Bottle Lake Forest Park's trails can be confusing, especially for first-time visitors. While some are well-marked, others lack clear signage, leading to potential disorientation. Taking a photo of the park map at the entrance is highly recommended, as relying solely on the map can be challenging. Be prepared for shared paths used by walkers, cyclists, and horse riders.

Forest Health & Amenities

Recent logging has significantly altered parts of the forest, with large areas of woodland felled. While recovery is expected over time, some visitors note the loss of mature trees. The park has limited amenities, with only one bin at the entrance, often overflowing. Consider bringing your own waste bags for dog waste or general litter.

Bottle Lake forest safe?

Hi, I enjoy forest walks, runs and cycle rides. Yet given the season we’re in right now, the chance I can be there during daylight hours is in the weekend… which I’m often out of the city. I used to go to Bottle Lake in the summer months after work during the week, but wondered…

Which are your go to hikes in chch?

Been on few of them like godley hill, halswell quarry and chch adventure park. But I know there is much more depth to hiking trails in chch. Since I am fairly new to the city, looking forward to find some good hikes around from chronic locals.

Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate Bottle Lake Forest Park for its natural beauty and therapeutic atmosphere, making it ideal for walks, runs, and dog outings. However, the park's trail signage is often criticized for being unclear, leading to confusion for first-time visitors. Recent logging has also altered the landscape, and limited amenities like bins are a recurring point of dissatisfaction.

"Went for a long run today and at first I was really impressed by the blue trail markers, but then they just stop being present and then you have to guess how to get to the southern pegasus bay track. Thankfully made it back right before pitch black but a little more signage would've been helpful. Not sure if I'll be back for a long run here."

Kaylee Schipani

"I mean, you can’t really get lost, but the trails could be marked better. The map was not necessarily helpful — even at trail intersections. I ended up just walking on the roads after a while out of frustration. I’m sure the regulars have no issues, but this was my first time here. I will have to come back and learn my way around."

Donald Sacca

"It was awesome here. Unfortunately the working forest has been felled so much over the past 18 months its taken huge amounts of great woodland away. Keep getting told its only 15 years until this recovers....."
