Many appreciate its role in connecting the city with nature and its dog-friendly policy. Some note that signage could be improved and advise checking tide times to avoid flooded paths.
"Picturesque trail. I started at the new brighton end and ran into the city, the tide was in on the return and many of the paths closer to new brighton were flooded (super high tide) including the underbridge, so just be mindful of the tide. Lovely scenery, mix of terrain, and peaceful."

"Excellent Walk. I think it’s about 13 km’s long. You can start and stop wherever you like. It’s so comfortable. Watching the river, rowers, runners, birds, ducks, all the little things they’ve put everywhere. Little Gardens, the old ‘Munted Bridge’, plenty of Fruit trees around too (in Summer months). It’s so calm and easy to get to!!
Give it a go - Try something new New Zealand 😉
P.S. Take your Dog !!!"

I hope that the council creates more of these leisure trails, as they encourage walkers, runners and bikers (plus some gorgeous dogs) to get out and about, and enjoy our city."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider starting your exploration closer to the city centre for easier access and more amenities. While the full 13km might be a bit much for very young children, you can easily do shorter sections. Remember to check tide times, as some areas can get wet, which might be an exciting adventure for some kids, but could limit access to certain paths.
🐶 Dog Owners
Remember to keep your dog under control, especially around other walkers, runners, cyclists, and wildlife. Bringing water for both yourself and your pet is recommended, particularly on warmer days. The promenade offers a beautiful and safe environment for you and your dog to enjoy the outdoors together.
🚴 Cyclists
While the trail is enjoyable, be aware that signage can be inconsistent in some areas, so having a general sense of direction or a map can be helpful. The mix of terrain is usually smooth enough for most bikes, but it's not a paved, high-speed track. It's more about a leisurely, scenic ride through Christchurch's green spaces.

While generally well-maintained, some sections might have less explicit signage, encouraging a sense of exploration. Visitors have noted the presence of fruit trees along the route, adding a seasonal charm, particularly during the summer months. It's also a popular spot for dog walkers, making it a truly community-oriented space.
