Reviews Summary
Visitors find Old Devonport Cemetery a moving and historically significant site, offering a poignant connection to early settlers. While many appreciate the stories etched in the headstones and the reflective atmosphere, some note the challenging steep terrain and the weathered condition of many graves, making them difficult to read.
"I love exploring cemeteries. Every grave has a name and a story. It makes you think about people who lived there and walked the streets we walk.
The site, now known as Mt. Victoria Cemetery, was approved for burial grounds by Executive Council in 1854. Many local settlers are buried here. Some of the graves are still in good condition, you can read the names, but many are not. I walked around this cemetery many times while in NZ, even though it’s located on the steep hill, I enjoyed every moment of it."

"We visited it yesterday and read many of the headstones. Very moving and it made me think of what these people went through. Some were in their 60s and 70s when they died and some were babies...so sad. Will visit again."
