"Schaelsberg Lime Kiln (Wikipedia 2021)
The Schaelsberg Lime Kiln is a lime kiln in the Dutch municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul in South Limburg. The structure is located northeast of Oud-Valkenburg on the Aachen-Maastricht railway line in the Schaelsbergerbos forest at the foot of the Schaelsberg and Daolkesberg mountains on the southeastern edge of the Central Plateau.
Approximately one kilometer to the east are the Walem Lime Kiln and the Kroongroeve Lime Kiln.
The lime kiln is located on the grounds of the Dutch Society for Nature Conservation (Vereniging Natuurmonumenten).
On May 30, 1919, J. van Filippo applied for a permit to build a lime kiln at the foot of the Schaelsberg. This permit was granted on July 31, 1919.
The lime kiln has a single kiln mouth. Kunrader limestone was burned in the lime kiln for the production of quicklime. This lime was then used for mortar or for marbling fields with agricultural lime."
