What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often describe Missiemuseum Steyl as a 'wild,' 'strange,' and 'brilliant' little museum. Its main draw is the incredibly dense, unchanged historical display of taxidermy animals, insects, and cultural artifacts, offering a unique time-capsule experience. While some find the sheer volume overwhelming, many appreciate its unconventional charm and historical significance.
"This museum is so strange in its origin, set-up and display that I can understand lower ratings as well. Why 5 stars? If you not only want to visit a museum, but fully experience a step back 100 years in time and amaze and even irritate yourself about worldviews then, this museum is a very unique experience and worth the trip to lovely Steyl village. Almost nothing has changed in the museum in 100 years and exactly that makes it so impressive. Only recently they have a side exhibition where the first steps of a critical review of the museum’s history and collection is started. But it is exactly the original displays, abundantly full, with only place of origin and object’s name and use that allow you to wonder about the context and history how this all was acquired, apparently without remorse or shame."

A Journey Through Time: The Museum's Unique Presentation
This preservation of its historical setting is precisely what makes the museum so special for many. Unlike contemporary museums that often opt for minimalist displays and interactive technology, Steyl offers a raw, unfiltered glimpse into a bygone era of collecting and exhibition. The sheer volume of taxidermied animals and meticulously arranged insects creates a powerful visual impact, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the past.
While the museum is beginning to introduce critical reviews of its history and collection, the core experience remains its original, unadulterated presentation. This makes it a fascinating destination for those interested in history, natural sciences, and the evolution of museum practices. It’s a place that encourages contemplation and a deeper understanding of historical perspectives.
The Natural Wonders: Animals and Insects
The insect collection, particularly the butterflies, is another major draw. It's described as one of the largest and most beautiful of its kind, with thousands of specimens meticulously pinned and displayed. The vibrant colors and intricate patterns of the butterflies are a testament to the dedication of the collectors. This section is a highlight for many, offering a visually stunning experience that contrasts with the more somber taxidermy displays.
It's important to note that the animals are crammed into a small space, which can make viewing some specimens challenging. However, the overall impression is one of awe at the scale and historical significance of these natural history collections. It provides a unique educational opportunity, especially for younger visitors, to learn about biodiversity and the history of scientific collection.
