"In the Middle Ages, Middelburg had eight city gates that protected the city from invaders.
The current cow gate was not one of them. It was more of an ornamental gate than a true defensive gate and is now the only remaining city gate in Middelburg.
In the 1730s, the city government decided to replace the cow gate.
Several predecessors had served their purpose, and it was time for a brand new cow gate.
City architect Jan de Munck completed this task in 1739.
A room was created in the cow gate for the gatekeepers.
At the beginning of the 20th century, two families lived in the cow gate in two identical small rooms.
During World War II, it housed a small shop, and the German occupiers attempted to install a radio jammer there, which failed.
After the war, the cow gate was again used as a home by the Korstanje couple. They lived there until July 1969.
Since 2019, you can stay overnight in luxury in the cow gate."
