Reviews Summary

Maastricht City Hall is lauded as an architectural masterpiece and a central point of the charming city. Visitors appreciate its historic significance, elegant design, and the lively atmosphere of the surrounding Markt square, especially during market days. Some reviews mention the square can be a bit messy at times, but the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive.

"A Masterpiece of Dutch Civic Architecture

The Maastricht Town Hall (Stadhuis) is an architectural gem in the very heart of the city. Built between 1659 and 1684, this elegant structure was designed by Pieter Post, one of the leading architects of the Dutch Golden Age. Originally intended to serve both the city magistrates and the representatives of the States-General, the building is a beautiful example of Dutch classicism—symmetrical, dignified, and refined.

One of its most iconic features is the central tower, added in 1684, which houses a charming carillon of 49 bells that still chime melodiously across the city. Inside, the richly decorated council chamber and wedding hall contain original 17th-century furnishings and ceiling paintings that whisper stories of centuries past.

The Vrijthof and Markt squares surrounding the Town Hall form a lively and picturesque setting. The Markt in particular, where the Stadhuis proudly stands, hosts vibrant markets and events throughout the year. The surrounding buildings—colorful, narrow, and full of character—add to the charm of the place, and the nearby cafés make it the perfect spot to sit, sip, and soak in the historic atmosphere.

Whether you’re a lover of history, architecture, or just looking to experience the soul of Maastricht, the Town Hall and its square are not to be missed."

"I must admit, Maastricht caught me by surprise. What an absolutely beautiful city. Cobblestone streets, beautiful cathedrals, peaceful parks, fashion, music, fabulous restaurants, and tourist friendly.

Traveling to, around, and from Maastricht is easy. Netherlands has an excellent network of trains and buses to get you to your destination. If you are arriving by air, your approach into Maastricht will come from either the Amsterdam or Brussels. Those are the closest airports. Maastricht has a small airport, but flights in and out are limited. For ground transportation, download the “NL Travel Planner” and… plan ahead! Uber? Yea, it’s available as well. If you plan on renting a car, there is underground parking available in the heart of Maastricht.

Are you a foodie? You just arrived in foodie central. It’s all available! Local, French, Italian, Indian… Burritos… yea baby! I wrote reviews on three of my favorites. Definitely did not count calories on this trip.

In the heart of the City you’ll find the Maastricht City Hall. Beautiful. It is surrounded by those fabulous restaurants I just mentioned on a network of pedestrian walkways. Within those cobblestone walkways you’ll find more fashion than your senses can absorb. As I walked around these stores I kept imagining everyday people strutting down a catwalk. Believe me they had some cool looking stuff.

I was in Maastricht on Business… I will definitely be planning a vacation to Maastricht soon!"
