What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Zernike Campus Groningen is praised for its modern, beautiful architecture and wide range of study programs. Visitors appreciate the good catering facilities and fast WiFi. However, significant concerns are raised about the severe lack of student parking and some design choices that prioritize aesthetics over functionality in lecture halls.
"An absolute lack of parking spots for students (apart from P6, but P6 has so few spots it shouldn't be a surprise to find it full each time you get there). With the current student housing problem this seems even more insane... Very, very disappointed."
Emiel van der Boon
"I am extremely disappointed with the lack of parking facilities for students. I understand the drive to promote cycling and a positive attitude towards the environment, but some students really would prefer to drive to university, especially if they happen to live in some other city wherefrom it is quite difficult to commute. Students are only permitted to use the P3 and P4 lots (thanks Hanze!) and the free lots, which are extremely poorly maintained. Moreover, when it gets busy, people just park in the middle of the road. The response of the university was to put up barriers blocking (or at least hindering) acces to the side street on which people parked. This is rude and quite unnecessary.
A better solution might, in my opinion, be arranging for better parking facilities for students. I would urge the university to reconsider their extremely aggravating aggressive stance against automobiles and respect people's choice of transportation means. For reference, the buses are often crowded and spend long in traffic jams, and so it is understandable that some people might not be thrilled with being forced to use them if they choose not to cycle.
The campus itself is acceptable. The buildings seem built with a heavier focus on design rather than function, though. (No proper blinds in Bernoulliborg lecture rooms, resulting in barely visible projections, etc . ). Given its size, it is quite difficult to walk around the campus, though this also gives it a more relaxed ambiance. The catering facilities in all buildings (perhaps except Linnaeusborg) are quite good and there is also an AH to go on campus. I am overall satisfied with the campus itself, and extremely dissatisfied with the accessibility thereof."

"Pretty buildings, hot TAs, moderately hot students, nice toilets, fast wifi, courses are mostly boring, not nice, would not recommend coming here to study."

Navigating Parking and Transportation
This situation highlights a disconnect between the university's environmental goals and the practical needs of some students. The advice from some travelers is to embrace cycling as the primary mode of transport, as it's well-supported by the campus infrastructure. For those who must drive, arriving very early or exploring park-and-ride options in the city center before taking public transport might be necessary. The bus services are frequent but can be crowded and subject to traffic delays, further complicating commutes.
Ultimately, planning your commute in advance is crucial. Whether you choose to cycle, take the bus, or attempt to drive, understanding the limitations and potential challenges will help ensure a smoother experience at Zernike Campus Groningen. :car: :bus: :athletic_shoe:
Campus Design and Functionality
However, some reviews point out that the buildings might prioritize design over practical functionality. For instance, lecture rooms in buildings like Bernoulliborg have been noted for lacking proper blinds, which can make projections difficult to see. This suggests that while the campus looks good, the day-to-day experience for students and staff might encounter minor inconveniences related to the building's design choices.
Despite these minor functional critiques, the overall impression of the campus is positive, with good catering facilities and fast WiFi contributing to a comfortable student experience. The modern infrastructure supports the academic mission, making it a conducive environment for learning and research. :building_construction: :bulb:
