What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Giethoorn's magical, fairytale-like atmosphere and the unique experience of exploring by boat. The charming canals, thatched-roof houses, and picturesque wooden bridges are consistently praised. While some find boat rentals can lead to traffic jams during peak times, most agree it's the best way to see the village. The need for good weather and potential for crowds are minor drawbacks.
"We visited Giethoorn, Netherlands and it was such a lovely experience!
We rented a boat for about €50 (for 2 people, 2 hours) — super fun and the best way to see this amazing area. The canals are beautiful, and it feels very peaceful to ride through the little village.
There are plenty of restaurants around to stop and eat, plus convenience like a supermarket and a free parking lot, which makes everything really easy.
Only thing is… you do need to hope for good weather, as the experience is really outdoors. But if the sun is shining, it’s absolutely perfect.
Highly recommend visiting!"

"Ultimate beauty. Venice of the Netherlands. Don't follow google route from parking as it is misleading. Better as locals where passage entrance is. Boat trip is kind of nonsense as they are all stuck in jams. Easier to walk and enjoy. Every corner is state of art. Extremely beautiful. Highly recommend."

"We visited the beautiful village of Giethoorn on 19th April, and it was nothing short of magical. The weather during the day was absolutely perfect—clear blue skies, sunshine, and a refreshing breeze. However, as the evening set in, the temperatures dropped quite a bit, so if you’re planning a visit during spring, make sure to carry a nice warm jacket to stay comfortable after sunset.
Giethoorn truly feels like a fairytale come to life, with its charming canals, quaint thatched-roof cottages, and peaceful atmosphere. Every corner looks like it’s straight out of a postcard. We stayed at The Black Sheep Hostel, which is the only hostel in the village. It was clean, cozy, and perfect for backpackers or budget travelers wanting to stay right in the heart of this idyllic setting.
The food scene was impressive too—every restaurant we tried offered great service and delicious meals, whether you’re in the mood for Dutch classics or something more international. Dining by the water with the view of passing boats was an experience in itself.
One useful tip: if you’re staying overnight in the village, plan to rent the console electric boats after 3 or 4 PM, especially on weekends. During the peak daytime hours, the canals get incredibly crowded with tourists, and it’s easy to get stuck in a traffic jam on water. A later boat ride is far more peaceful and allows you to enjoy the charm of the village at your own pace."
