"Must ensure that you visit this palace courtyard when you visit Patan. It is included when you purchase entrance ticket to Patan Durbar (1,000 NPR for visitors from other countries, 250 NPR for South Asian countries). A small courtyard but has exquisite details - highlights will be the intricately carved Tusha Hiti (stepwell) and the carvings on door frame, supporting pillars, etc.

We were here yesterday and they start to lock up the place around 5:15-5:30pm. After sunset around 5:20pm, it gets dark very fast. For art/architecture enthusiast, I would suggest to set aside at least 30-45 minutes for this place alone."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Tusha Hiti: A Royal Bath's Story

The Tusha Hiti is the undisputed centerpiece of Sundari Chowk, a sunken royal bath built in the 17th century by King Siddhinarasimha Malla. This architectural marvel is not just a functional space but a work of art, adorned with intricate sculptures of deities and mythical creatures. Its design reflects the deep spiritual and artistic sensibilities of the Malla dynasty. The Tusha Hiti was a private sanctuary for the kings, a place of ritual and relaxation, embodying the grandeur of royal life. Instagram+1

Recent efforts have focused on preserving and even reconstructing elements of this historical site. The Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust has been instrumental in documenting and restoring such heritage sites. Some of these efforts include 3D reconstructions, allowing for digital preservation and wider appreciation of these ancient structures. Instagram+1

Interestingly, the golden statue often seen in the Tusha Hiti today is not the original. The original masterpiece, commissioned by King Siddhinarasimha Malla, was unfortunately stolen and smuggled, though efforts have been made for its return. This adds another layer to the rich and sometimes poignant history of this sacred space. Instagram

Newar Architecture and Craftsmanship

Sundari Chowk is a prime example of Newar architecture, a style renowned for its elaborate woodwork, intricate stone carvings, and pagoda-style structures. The courtyard itself, meaning 'beautiful courtyard,' lives up to its name with its enclosed, serene atmosphere and the sheer artistry displayed on every surface. The Malla period, particularly the 17th century, was a golden age for this architectural style, and Sundari Chowk stands as a testament to that era's craftsmanship. Instagram+1

Visitors are often struck by the exquisite details found on the door frames, supporting pillars, and window designs. These carvings are not merely decorative; they often depict religious motifs, mythological figures, and scenes from daily life, offering a glimpse into the cultural and spiritual beliefs of the time. The meticulous skill of the artisans who created these pieces is truly awe-inspiring. Reddit

The Patan Museum, located within the Sundari Chowk complex, further enhances the visitor experience by showcasing artifacts and historical items that complement the architectural wonders. This combination of living heritage and museum exhibits provides a comprehensive understanding of Nepal's rich artistic and historical legacy. Instagram
