Historical Significance of Ashoka Stupas
The construction of these stupas is linked to Emperor Ashoka's conversion to Buddhism and his subsequent efforts to spread the faith across his empire. He is credited with building over 80,000 shrines and temples, and these Patan stupas are significant remnants of that era. Ashoka Stupa North, also known as Ibahi Thur, is situated on the northern side of Patan Bazaar, near Yampi Mahavihar.
Visiting these stupas offers a glimpse into the deep historical and religious connections of the Kathmandu Valley. They are not just architectural marvels but also living monuments that continue to hold spiritual importance for the local community, with ongoing practices like lighting lamps and maintaining prayer flags.
