Reviews Summary

Anisakan Falls is lauded for its breathtaking, multi-tiered beauty, offering a rewarding natural escape. Visitors appreciate the stunning cascades and the option to explore different stages via off-road trails. However, some travelers caution about potential scams and the strenuous nature of the hike, advising clear negotiation with guides and preparation for the steep ascent.

"Dat Taw Gyaint Waterfall, sometimes referred to as Anisakan Waterfall, is one of the best natural sights to see in Myanmar. Having lived here for a few years, I have come back multiple times to see it, and it never disappoints.

The hike itself is pretty short and simple. It's 2 km each way on a winding, concrete road. There's no way to get lost if you follow the road. However, be prepared for a pretty steep descent of 300 meters straight down, and an equally steep ascent coming back up. If you want to skip the ascent, you can hire a motorbike at the bottom to take you back up.

There is also an off-road route, which branches off from the paved road and goes through the forest. You will almost certainly encounter a group of ladies at the start road offering to guide you. I have tried it and it is a fun alternative, though it is the same waterfall system. If you don't want their services, you have to be very direct with them.

For those unable to make the hike, you can also see the waterfall from The View Restaurant. While the food is just okay, it's worth coming for the view. I find it looks best around sunset during the rainy season when the waterfall is at full capacity."

"The most amazing waterfall I've seen hands down! We didn't go directly to the big waterfall but instead went off the beaten path and followed the river and enjoyed the 4 stages that lead up to the main waterfall! It's a tricky hiking trail and might not be entirely safe when it has rained recently so do this route at your own risk otherwise it's well worth it. Find our amazing guide (Hton Mon) he was super extra!"

"Incredibly beautiful waterfall on the way to Pyin Oo Lwin. The waterfall has four distinct steps each beautiful in its own way. They can be visited by trekking through a steep trail along the side of the mountain and takes 2 to 3 hours to complete. Definitely worth a visit. There is also a beautiful monastery inside a cave slightly off the trail."

Deep Dives

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Hike: Paved Road vs. Off-Road Adventure

The journey to Anisakan Falls offers two distinct paths. The most straightforward route is a 2 km concrete road that winds down to the main waterfall. While easy to follow, it involves a significant 300-meter descent, meaning an equally strenuous 300-meter ascent on the way back. Many visitors opt to hire a motorbike at the bottom to ease the climb. Reddit

For a more immersive experience, an off-road trail branches off the paved road, leading through the forest and along the river. This path allows you to discover the waterfall's four distinct stages. Local women often offer their services as guides for this route, which can be a fun way to explore but requires careful negotiation of fees. Be aware that this trail can be tricky and potentially unsafe after recent rainfall. Reddit

Regardless of the path chosen, comfortable footwear with good grip is essential. The steepness of both routes means that preparation for a physical challenge is key to enjoying the stunning natural beauty of Anisakan Falls. Reddit

Navigating Local Interactions and Safety

When visiting Anisakan Falls, you'll likely encounter local women offering to guide you, particularly for the off-road trail. While these guides can enhance your experience by showing you all four waterfall stages, it's crucial to be direct if you decline their services. Some travelers have reported feeling pressured or encountering unsolicited 'followings.' Reddit

It's also important to be aware of potential scams. Some visitors have reported being asked for exorbitant amounts of money for guiding services, far exceeding the local daily wage. To avoid this, always negotiate any fees clearly and upfront. Using offline maps like Maps.me can help you navigate independently, but be prepared to be firm if locals insist on guiding you. Reddit

Beyond potential scams, the primary safety concern is the terrain. The steepness of the trails, especially the off-road path after rain, requires caution. Stick to marked paths where possible and be mindful of your footing to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit to this beautiful natural attraction. Reddit

The View Restaurant: A Scenic Stop

Even if you're not planning a full meal, The View Restaurant offers a compelling reason to visit: its spectacular vantage point overlooking Anisakan Falls. This is an excellent option for those who are unable to undertake the hike or prefer to admire the waterfall from a comfortable distance. Reddit

The restaurant's food quality is described as 'just okay' by some visitors, but the panoramic views, especially around sunset during the rainy season when the waterfall is at its most powerful, make it a worthwhile stop. It provides a different perspective on the falls' grandeur and is a convenient place to rest and take in the scenery. Reddit
