"The actual tombs themselves are impressive and I could not believe that the restoration had only been completed in 2017."

The next stop on...

Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Saadian Tombs architecturally stunning, particularly the intricate marble and tilework in the royal mausoleum. However, many note that the site is quite small, and the viewing experience for the main tomb involves long queues for a limited perspective. Some feel the ticket price might be high for the overall experience, especially compared to larger sites like El Badi Palace. Reddit

"Not sure this one is worth it, to be honest. Ticket prices are quite high during peak tourist times (I don’t recall the exact amount), and many attractions seem to charge the same rate. There’s also usually a long queue for the main tomb, which really isn’t worth it. The site itself is quite small – everything you see is basically in the photos – especially compared to places like El Badi."

Mehdi

"Beautiful necropolis with plenty of tombs inside and outside the complex. Obviously the ones inside are for the royalty and the ones outside are for servants and workers. The site is well maintained and we can't really walk inside the building, so we can only take pictures from the doorway. However, the doorway is so small it can only take 3 people at a time so expect long queues on some days."

Suciani Arta

"I found the visit here to be quite boring. It’s a graveyard. Architecture was quite interesting and I enjoyed looking at some of the walls which were beautifully decorated but nothing else really was attractive for me. The one room which you have to queue for 30 minutes or 20 minutes depending what time of the day you visit is overrated"

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

The Saadian Tombs can be a brief but visually engaging stop for families. The colorful tiles and marble are often captivating for children, offering a glimpse into historical artistry. Instagram However, be prepared for potential queues to see the main mausoleum, which might test younger children's patience. In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Hidden Gem Rediscovered

The Saadian Tombs are a testament to the opulent Saadian dynasty, dating back to the 16th century. For centuries, these mausoleums were hidden from view, only to be rediscovered in 1917. This period of obscurity helped preserve their stunning architectural details, making their rediscovery a significant historical event. Instagram

The complex is divided into two main areas: the Royal Mausoleum, which houses the tombs of Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur and his family, and the surrounding gardens containing the tombs of servants and soldiers. The contrast between the grandeur of the royal tombs and the simpler resting places of others offers a poignant historical perspective. Instagram

Visitors often remark on the exquisite craftsmanship, particularly the use of Italian Carrara marble, intricate stucco work, and vibrant Zellij tilework. While the main tomb chamber is the star attraction, the entire site offers a rich visual experience for those interested in Moroccan history and art. Reddit

Navigating the Viewing Experience

A common point of discussion among visitors is the viewing experience of the main royal mausoleum. Due to its delicate nature and to maintain a sense of reverence, access is restricted. You can only view the interior from the doorway, and only a few people are allowed in at a time. InstagramReddit

This restriction often leads to long queues, which can be frustrating for some, especially during peak times. Some reviewers suggest the wait might not be worth it for everyone, particularly if you're on a tight schedule or expecting to explore extensively inside. Reddit However, others appreciate that this method helps preserve the sacredness of the space and allows for a more focused, albeit brief, appreciation of the stunning interior. Reddit

If you plan to visit, patience is key. Consider visiting during less busy hours, or be prepared to wait. The information boards on-site provide interesting historical context about the tombs and the Saadian dynasty, which can enhance your understanding and appreciation of the site. Reddit
