Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the incredibly fresh seafood and the unique experience of choosing their catch and having it grilled on the spot. The vibrant atmosphere is a major draw, offering an authentic taste of local life. However, some tourists report being overcharged, highlighting the importance of clear price negotiation and awareness of potential tourist scams.
"Traditional fish market with lots of fresh selection. We wanted to buy our own fish and get a local to cook them. Lots of locals offer this service, but be careful for what you sign up for. Make sure to get the sellers to explain everything including prices. They’re happy to explain. Plate of food for four cost 900 dirhams."

"The fish markets of Essaouria are amazingly busy places. Very slippery and smelly but a fantastic insight into the local industry and how it supports tourism. Lots to see"

"TOURIST SCAM! DO NOT EAT HERE. Unless you are a local I would reccomend that no tourist eat here! They have you choose your fish and sit down then they give you the price. The original price for 1 small dorado fish , 1 small squid and some shrimp was almost 400 dh!! Once we told them to take out some sides and the shrimp we still paid 220dh for a very mediocre meal. I have had better fish for much cheaper. We were told by a local we were scammed and should have only paid 50dh in total. Very sad experience as we were very excited to go"

The fish market is located in the heart of Essaouira's medina, near the port. It's easily accessible on foot if you're staying within the city walls. Taxis can also drop you nearby.
Parking can be challenging in the medina. It's best to walk or take a taxi if possible. If driving, look for designated parking areas outside the medina walls.
Walking is the best way to explore the port and fish market. Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes as the ground can be wet and slippery.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
No, entry to the fish market itself is free. You only pay for the fish you purchase and any associated cooking services.
The market is most active in the morning when the fishing boats return. Many stalls and cooking areas operate throughout the day, especially for lunch and dinner.

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
When it comes to eating, choose a restaurant with a bit more space and perhaps a slightly less chaotic setup. The fish burger is often a hit with kids, and sharing a plate of grilled fish can be a fun, communal meal. Remember to negotiate prices clearly to ensure it remains an affordable family outing.
💰 Budget Travelers
Be prepared to haggle politely. The key is to compare prices from different vendors and cooking stations. A meal of grilled fish, perhaps with some sides, can be incredibly affordable if done right. Avoid pre-packaged meals or set menus, and focus on buying your catch and having it cooked simply.

The Art of Choosing and Cooking Your Catch
Once you've chosen your fish, the next step is to arrange for it to be cooked. Numerous small grills and restaurants are set up right next to the market. They will typically prepare your chosen seafood using simple, delicious methods like grilling or frying. It's crucial to have a clear discussion about the price for both the fish and the cooking service before you agree to anything. This transparency helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures a fair price.
Many visitors find the experience incredibly rewarding, highlighting the freshness and flavor of the seafood. The lively atmosphere, combined with the delicious, freshly prepared meal, makes it a memorable part of any trip to Essaouira. Some even describe it as a 'must-do' for seafood lovers.
Understanding the Market's Vibe and Potential Pitfalls
However, it's important to be aware of potential tourist traps. Some reviews mention instances where tourists were overcharged, particularly if they didn't clarify prices beforehand. The key is to be informed and assertive. Learn a few basic Arabic phrases, be patient, and don't be afraid to walk away if a price doesn't feel right. Engaging with locals respectfully can often lead to better experiences and fairer prices.
Despite the occasional cautionary tale, the overwhelming sentiment is that the fish market offers a unique and worthwhile experience. The chance to eat incredibly fresh seafood, prepared simply and deliciously, at a reasonable price (if negotiated well) is a major draw. It's about embracing the local culture and enjoying the fruits of the sea.
