What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Natural History Museum of Montenegro to be a small, affordable, and interesting stop, particularly for families. While the exhibits are modest and primarily in Montenegrin, the low entry fee makes it a worthwhile experience for a quick glimpse into local natural history. The staff are noted for their efforts despite presentation limitations.
"Difficult to locate museum. Little to nothing inside. The presentation of the very few items was poorly executed. Noting is written in English, so you must utilize your translator function to its fullest on your DCD (smart phone).
I am constantly amazed at how few curators of museums obtain an actual education from an accredited university and are employed yet do such a truly deplorable job. This is an excellent example of a missed opportunity."

"On Saturday we had luck at 12:30. It was open till 2 p.m. without lunch break (13:00-13:30). It is a smaller museum, such an exposition of minerals, snakes, amphibians, butterflies, beetles, insects, birds and fish. The accompanying exhibition there was the history of tea, its cultivation and processing of varieties. The descriptions of the exhibits are only in the Cyrillic of the Montenegrin language... It was a good thing that I learned to read texts in azbuka during my elementary school. I have a recommendation to the museum: English descriptions for foreign tourists would also be great."

"it shows that the staff in doing their best, but it will be a long time to get to western museum level. still a nice visit for 1-2 hours with young children"

Understanding the Exhibits
One unique aspect noted by visitors is the occasional inclusion of temporary exhibitions, such as one on the history and cultivation of tea. This adds an unexpected layer to the museum's offerings. However, a significant challenge for international visitors is the lack of English descriptions. Most labels are in Montenegrin Cyrillic, making a translation app almost essential for a comprehensive understanding of the exhibits.
Despite the presentation challenges, the staff are commended for their efforts. The museum is considered a worthwhile stop for those interested in a quick overview of local natural history, especially families with young children who are often captivated by the animal displays.
Visitor Experience and Expectations
However, it's important for visitors to manage their expectations. Some reviews point out that the museum's presentation could be improved to align with international standards, describing it as a 'missed opportunity' in some aspects. The limited number of items and the basic display methods are noted. Nevertheless, the staff are recognized for doing their best with the resources available.
The primary practical hurdle for tourists is the language barrier. With exhibit information exclusively in Montenegrin Cyrillic, utilizing a smartphone translation app is crucial for gaining deeper insights into the displays. This makes the visit more interactive and educational for non-native speakers.
