What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by the breathtaking panoramic views of Kotor Bay from the Church of Our Lady of Remedy, especially during sunset. However, the experience is tempered by a steep, challenging climb with limited safety features, a potentially high entrance fee, and a lack of amenities like restrooms, which have led to hygiene concerns and reports of vandalism.
"A great spot to see overview of Kotor. It had an entrance fee of 15 Euros which I think was overpriced. The church on top was closed and I think it does not operate anymore. There are a lot of ruins in the area and the climb to top was really hard and dangerous. The route lacks safety barriers that will prevent a person falling off the edge of the cliff. It lacked directional arrows also so most of the time you will get lost or wandering around due to multiple passages that will lead to a dead end or back from where you are. There is a stairway but it is too narrow as it can only fit 1 person at a time so you will end up climbing on the rocky paths if you meet someone opposite your way. I do not recommend this for old people specially when the sun is scorching hot. I did not see any comfort rooms also and that is maybe the reason why I can smell urine almost everywhere, people just have to relieve themselves on hidden areas due to the absence of comfort rooms. I hope they improve this place, for the price they charge for the entrance fee, they should start renovating the place by keeping it tidy and removing the vandalisms."

"Great hike, worth going all the way to the fortress but this is a much shorter walk. It's free in the evenings after 8pm or €15 each in the day. Spectacular views."

"What an amazing hike we did and had a rest in front of this church. It provided us a great shade and nice breeze coming from the bay. It was worth a climb. The gov’t should develop this site. Need more restrooms and resting areas so people can enjoy the hike and view more. Clean the areas where people relieved themselves as you can smell it from afar and it’s not very nice. You don’t want to be put of just because of this. Catch the people who do the vandalism and littering."

The Challenging Ascent
Some visitors have noted that the route can be confusing, with multiple passages leading to dead ends or backtracking, making directional signage a welcome improvement. The narrowness of the stairway means that passing others can be difficult, sometimes forcing hikers onto rocky paths. For those who find the full climb daunting, it's worth noting that even partial ascents offer increasingly impressive vistas.
While the climb is demanding, the opportunity to reach a historic site and witness such spectacular scenery is a significant draw. Planning your visit during cooler parts of the day, like early morning or late evening, can make the experience more enjoyable.
Views and Vandalism: A Mixed Experience
However, the experience is not without its drawbacks. Several reviews mention that the church itself may be closed or not actively in use, which can be disappointing given the effort to reach it. More concerning are the reports of vandalism and littering, which detract from the natural beauty and historical significance of the site. The lack of adequate restroom facilities has also led to unpleasant odors in certain areas, impacting the overall visitor experience. These issues have led some to suggest that the local government should invest more in developing and maintaining the site, including adding more restrooms and resting areas.
Despite these criticisms, the sheer beauty of the view often overshadows the negative aspects for many. The church, dating back to 1518, remains a significant landmark, and its elevated position provides a unique perspective on Kotor's charm.
