What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Island of Flowers is praised for its historical significance, particularly the Monastery of St. Michael the Archangel, and its peaceful, scenic environment. Visitors appreciate the tranquil atmosphere and the opportunity to explore ancient ruins. However, some reviewers note that the island could benefit from better maintenance and upkeep, with mentions of trash and a general sense of neglect in certain areas.
"For those who have an interest in Orthodox Christianity, this is an important place.
The monastery is dedicated to Archangel Michael. It was founded by Serbian Archbishop Sava (s. 1219–35). The church base was built earlier, reconstructed in the 9th century and destroyed in the 11th century. The monastery was the seat of the Eparchy of Zeta between the 13th and 15th centuries.
The monastery was destroyed by the Republic of Venice in 1441 after it was proclaimed unsafe due to the rumors of a plague breakout. Recent research by the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade, using recovered remains of monks from that time have revealed that the monks died due to arsenic poisoning. This is a place worth visiting!"

"Huge potential but even bigger disappointment. It looks like no one is taking care of the place. The entrance to the island is falling apart, a lot of trash all around, street dogs walking freely...houses on the island look like they were built 50 years ago and since then no one has ever visited them. I simply can't believe that such a beautiful island remains there as the wild west..."
